This is going to sound like an editorial, but, I'm sorry, it can't be helped.
I am heartsick everyday, these days...it seems like every day people are killing other people for what seems to me absolutely no reason.
White, Black,Arab, Egyptian, Polish, Ukranian, Icelanders, Canadians (who make up all of these colors, religions, ethnic groups, and more...), Americans (who also are a melting pot of ethnicity)...what difference does it make? We are all people, and as people, we all deserve the respect of other people, as they deserve ours. It boggles my mind to think that just because I have a certain religion, colour of skin, hair, or a different way of leading my life from others, that I may be the target of some "whacko" with a gun or a bomb.
I actually was a "victim" of a drive-by shooting in 1993. The police were very polite to me, treated me well, but really just sugar-coated the fact that I was a statistic; and that they would probably not even ever find out who was responsible, let alone make an arrest or prosecute him/them. It was put down to a "gang iniation"...someone who didn't even know me tried to kill me (I was shot in the head). This fact blew me away. I know that there are some people in this world who do not like me (doesn't everyone?), and I could see them quite happily shooting me in the head in expectation of my death, but a total stranger?
Random violence for violence's sake is anathema to me. And so, the recent Pentagon and World Trade Center tragedies have ignited a part of me that I wasn't sure existed anymore. I'm Canadian, live in the province of Manitoba, far from both targets, but I want revenge. I'd like to see the US or whoever is able, to retaliate by bombing any country who won't turn this devil incarnate over for right and proper judgement, a speedy trial, no appeals, and a speedy but painful death. (They shoot rabid dogs, don't they?)
My heart goes out to anyone innocent in these massacres, most especially to the victims on the planes and in the buildings that were involved in the tragedy. But, America, and Canada, it's time to stand up and shout: "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore!!!" (to paraphrase a line from a movie about television networks). It's time that the "hands across the border" be furled into fists and then made to strike hard, before some other atrocity occurs.
Well, that's my rant and venting session. If I have offended anyone, it was not intentional. This is the truth as I see it from my perch here on the ranch near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
