Forgiveness Brings Freedom
by David Pekrul
copyright 03-26-2006

Age Rating: 7 to 127

I read from a book of how people should be,
And then saw the way which they are,
Yet showing forgiveness is what we should do,
But often we're left with a scar.

For some treat us badly, and show no respect,
For things held in highest regard,
They leave us confounded and worst of it all,
Our hearts will be ever on guard.

But we must forgive them for things which they do,
Forgiveness will help us break free,
Though turning the cheek is the thing we should do,
It scars us in some small degree.

But just as the Saviour, who came for the lost,
Was beaten and left with a scar,
He asked of His Father, "Forgivest thou them,"
And God sent His love from afar.

So we should forgive those who treat us with scorn,
And show them the love of our Lord,
Remember, forgiveness was given to us,
And freedom will be our reward.

True, this piece has rhyme and meter, but in what ways is it a poem? The theme is well suited for prose. The straight-forward statement of ideas is prosaic.

Poetry for me must have an objective moment, an image or metaphor in which I can participate with the writer in his deepeest emotions.

The poem must be an alternate reality for me-- a detailed construction that invites me to feel.

Although as you know, I don't agree with the sentiment expressed, the poem is very well constructed and flows well.
Forgiveness to me depends upon what has been done.
As we both know, we usually agree to disagree.
Cheers, Brian.
