Stalked By A Crow
by Tabitha Beaudin (Age: 30)
copyright 05-06-2006

Age Rating: 13 to 127

As I walk, I notice a murder of crows. Their symphony of caws and shrieks evoke in me musings of mortality. Or is it songs of elation? From death's perspective a welcome surprise. In my mind's eye, the bird's entwine. Becoming a phantom harvester pounding out the drum's last beat, the memorized certainty of clapping wings. Ready for their encore, the crows push on through the murkiness.

One lingers, drops before me. The oily blackness of it's feathers mimics the night. She hops three times and stands at my feet. Head-cocked and grinning. I turn and walk swiftly downhill. The crow follows, talons brushing the cement.

Stumbling to my front door, I force the key in. The foyer waits. Once inside Iam safe. But what's this, from the kitchen window a cascade of tapping. Do I dare look? With quivering hands I part the curtains. Oh, what do I behold? The crow, the crow, her beak brimming with worms. She lowers her talons from the window, winks at me, then flies to the apple tree. She burrows herself into a domain of stick and twigs. Her secret exposed. Three baby crows climb over each other to get those offered worms. And like a flash of lighting, she is soaring. She circles once leisurely, then disappears.

I found this so interesting, as there are many ravens where I live; also, when I was a kid, I had a pet crow.
This is well-written, very expressive, good word choice.

I think that the imagery contained in this piece is breath-taking. You conjured up a drum roll of imagery that beckons the reader to keep reading. This is not easy to do, but it separates the good from the mediocre. Your narration is top-notch, the only thing that I find that you should not have done, is to give away the sex of the bird. The fact that you did this, immediately alerted me that there was something else going on. I would revise this immediately! Otherwise, this is an excellent write, full of mystery, drama and instinct!

This is great, I really like it. Kind of a spin off of "The Raven", one of my absolutely favorites of all time. I do hope you plan on sharing lots more with us in the future. Creepy that, being followed by a crow. Crows are known to be messengers, usually of ill fate, but sometimes of good tidings, including child birth. In my religion anyway, lol. I'm glad that you shared this. Take care, and keep it up!! =^,.,^=
