Sidney
(Chapter 5)
by Bob Church
copyright 10-07-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Papers adorned Sam Renton's desk, as usual. Daylight was fast escaping the room, but he didn't turn on the light. Sam enjoyed the soothing effect of the shadows as they fell across the room, casting the normally bright tones in a somber hue and paraphrasing his own mood. As he graded tests, Sam reflected on his vocation and his relative value to his students. The gloom filling the room filtered into his thoughts. In the early days of his career, he'd learned right along with his students. Kids were simpler in those days. Silently, he wondered if it was just his displaced ego; he had been able to make a difference, at least to a few. Now... well, his salary and responsibilities had increased, but he had serious doubts about his worth. Sidney’s words were true.

Most disconcerting of all, the best and brightest were becoming cynical and detached, long before they got to college. He thought of Sidney Overstreet as a case in point. Here was a kid with an IQ of 165 who was almost totally unable to function. In the seventies, Sidney might have been president of the chess club, or a delegate to Boy's State. Even taking into consideration that the kid apparently had some deep-seated personality problems, he would have been identified by the system and given the help he needed. In the present, however, Sidney had slipped between the cracks, turning inward, supplanted with anger, rebellion and God only knows what else.

Sam Renton rubbed his face and stretched as he yawned. Maybe he was getting too old. Maybe he should check into that beach house in Miami. The faintest hint of a smile passed across his face as he dismissed the thought and picked up the student handbook. He traced the listings with his index finger, and stopped at Esther Overstreet's work number. It wouldn’t hurt to try, at least a little. Then, perhaps he could get some sleep.

Sidney is making a lot of people step back and take a look at themselves.

Oh yeah, Sidneys words were true an he knows it.
