Sidney
(Chapter 6)
by Bob Church
copyright 10-07-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

"St.Mark's, Esther speaking, may I help you?"

Sam listened, impressed with her voice. She was assertive and confidence inspiring, yet gentle, just the sort of voice conducive to a priest's liaison with the public.

"Yes, I hope you can, Mrs. Overstreet, this is Sam Renton calling, I'm Sidney's Biology teacher."

There was a pause and a slight stammer on the other end, she was obviously taken aback by the sound of his voice.

"Is Sidney all right? What's happened?" Esther’s voice was suddenly very agitated, Sam noticed, wondering if she were expecting bad news.

"No, it's okay, Mrs. Overstreet, Sidney's fine, but I do want to talk to you. Could we meet somewhere, maybe this afternoon or this evening? I have some concerns I'd like to discuss with you, but not over the phone. Where would you feel comfortable meeting with me?"

Again, a perceptible silence on the other end of the phone line, as Esther processed the information she had received.

"Well, I guess I could meet with you. I know Sidney has been under some pressure lately. Could you come over here to the rectory at St. Mark's, at 7 p.m., or so?" Her voice trailed off, no longer confident.

" 7 p.m. it is, then. I look forward to meeting you. Thank you, Mrs. Overstreet. Good bye."

Sam Renton didn't wait for an acknowledgement. He heard fear in her voice.

Does she tell him the truth regarding the home life? Or does she let him say what he wants and not stand up for Sidney to preserve her own secret?
