No Particular Thought In Mind
by Richard Reed Jr
copyright 05-08-2006

Age Rating: 7 to 127

The weeds had yellowed the first frost had come
I didn't want to think it was true
All I could see were a thousand wind whipped trees
Yellow stubble fields bathed in pale cold sunshine

Once there were elm trees beginning to show their buds
A grassy parkland alive with scurrying figures
Where young pups like us went to play
With no particular thought in mind

The park gave us a place to be
And gave us a sense of place
But most of all gave us each other
And each other was beautiful to we

I realized that time's a diminishing road
Upon which winter would too-soon descend
But we were busy blinking raindrops from our eyes
With no particular thought in mind

Summertime blazed in on a hard girth-ed saddle
While an old weeping willow washed her hair in the pond
And as the sun cut into the yellow sky's haze
One dogday'd drooping doggie slipped under the porch

As the old road got longer and stretched my horizon
I saw autumn would not be long behind
But we sat by our old pond honking at geese
With no particular thought in mind

Surely as predicted on a lonely wind-raked road
Autumn walked in slowly under dark pine shadows
My grayed friend enjoyed autumn's longer walks best
And when chasing squirrels she could almost catch one

We'd hang out at schoolyards
Where kindred spirits played
I pushed back the frontiers of memory
Where only I could go
She played ball while I rode the bench
Knowing that she was the one
With no particular thought in mind

It was yet some time before winter was due
She'd been sleeping a month or more
She couldn't recognize friend from stranger
So I burdened autumn to carry her through that door

It was a few candles short of Thanksgiving
A chilly night, turning crisp the edges of day
As I began to weep, she slid comfortably to sleep
With no particular thought in mind

You have a lot to say, and still a lot more left unsaid, I can see this picture painted haphazardly, with parts left blank to be touched up. Someday maybe when your ready you will finish this one my friend, I can see only the surface the universal truth we all must see, but what is the mystery your covering up, that's the one I wanna see. Great write, good job, very interesting, thanks,

Regina
