Hi, my name is Mika Robinstein, and I’m going to tell you a deadly story. In 1933 World War II started, and Adolph Hitler came to power. Hitler believed in the Aryan race, which consisted of blue eyed and blonde haired people. The Germans were in serious financial trouble and they needed some one to blame. The Jews were doing well in the world wide depression. They had more money than the average German. Hitler told the Germans that the Jews were to blame, and that they were the reason the country is in such bad shape. He told them the only solution was the “Final Solution,” or other wise known as the total extermination of Jews.
Most Jews didn’t know what was coming for them. Hitler not only hated Jews, but he hated people who were “different” such as Gypsies, handy capped people, and homosexuals. He wanted to rid Europe of them all. My family and I where good Catholic people, and we all had blonde hair and blue eyes. We where friends with many different people, mostly Jews. My father had two best friends, a German solider, and a Jewish man named Ira. The German solider told my father what Hitler was planning to do with the Jews, and how he was building concentration and death camps for them.
My father told Ira and his family the bad news and insisted that they hide in our basement. “No one will suspect us hiding Jews in our basement. It’s pretty big down there, a bit chilly, but you’ll be ok,” my father said reassuringly. “Oh no. We couldn’t possibly! It’s too dangerous.” Ira argued. “You are our friend we aren’t to be bystanders and watch you get taken away to those ghastly camps! Your staying here whether you like it or not!” Mrs. Robinstein insisted. “Gather some of your things and in the middle of the night and you will come over and get settled.” My father told Ira and his family as he shooed them away. A Nazi solider came over and hit Ira with the butt of his rifle. “STOP! He did nothing wrong!” My father screamed. We all watched in fear as the soldier beat my father too. I wasn’t going to just stand there and let them both get beaten up. I Tried to run over, but my mom stopped me and covered my mouth so the solider couldn’t hear my screams. The Nazi finally stopped and walked away. These sorts of things happened more often. Hitler actually encouraged it.
My father was beaten up pretty bad, but Ira suffered the worst. He had at least one broken rib, if not two. Night time came and Ira and his family packed up and went off to live in their new home. My mom showed them the basement. Ira had one child named Edith. She was about my age, maybe a little older. “You’ve got to be kidding me! I’m not staying here. It’s cold, dark, and there’s NO fresh air.” Edith complained. She always complained. That’s what she did best. I was never really friends with her because of it. I didn’t like complainers. My mom always tried to get me to play with her. She didn’t have many friends. I had lots of friends. They all looked down on her, I kind of felt bad.
They weren’t allowed out of the basement until 10:00pm. Most people were asleep by then so it was pretty safe to come out. During the day mom made me bring them food. About two months later, the Nazi party was coming around gathering Jews and bringing them to the camps. It was the beginning of the Holocaust. So many people began to dislike and hate the Jews. They spat and threw things at them and called them names like “dirty Jew and Christ killers.” Hitler wanted all the Jews to be segregated into ghettos. Many Jews started to immigrate into other countries, thinking that they would be safe, but soon Hitler took over those countries too.
Everyday German soldiers would come door to door looking for hidden Jews. One beautiful sunny day, my family and I went to the park and did typical family stuff. We played ball and tag and were just having a good old time. While we were out, Nazi soliders came to our house and tore it apart. They destroyed almost all of our fine things. We came home to find our home destroyed and two Nazis sitting at our table. The Nazis shouted at us. “You’re hiding Jews in your basement!?” “No! God no! Those are our servants! We wound NEVER hide Jews in our home!” my mother screamed. The Nazis looked at our “servants”. They saw Edith, she had just taken her star of David off and you could see the outline out of it. One of the Nazis picked her up by the collor and screamed “JEW” in her face. They started to gather Ira and his family when I sreamed. “They’re not Jewish! The girl needed cloths and we didn’t have enough money to buy her some so I found that shirt on a street and I gave it to her! Don’t take them away!” The Nazis spat at her and walked away.
After that, no more Nazis came to our house. The next day when I brought food down to them, Edith wanted to talk to me privately. “I know we haven’t been best friends lately… and I’m sorry for all my complaining… it’s just that I’m lonely. I never had many friends and the one friend I had got taken to a death camp and was killed.” She was crying while spilling her guts to me. “The only reason I kept having you come down here was because I was lonely and for some reason you always brightened up the place, made it a little less cold.” “Oh.” I was in total shock. I felt so bad for always giving her an an attitude. All she ever wanted was a friend, someone to talk to and tell secrets, but no I had to be mean and ignore her. I’m such a horrible person. “Thanks.” She said wipeing her tears away. “For what?” I asked. “For saving my family and me from those Nazis.” She sounded so sincere. “Uh… sure, I mean I just wasn’t going to stand there and let them take you away and kill you.” I protested. Then out of nowhere She just pounced on me and gave me the biggest hug. It was so full of love and care. I started to cry. “Whats wrong?” Edith asked, concerned. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. All this time all you wanted was a friend and I was just so mean, I was so mean. I don’t deserve to be your friend!” I was crying so hard. I couldn’t stop. Edith wiped away my tears and said, “Don’t say that. I was mean too. We are both guilty as charged, so what. We are sorry and that’s all that matters”.
From that moment on we were best friends. Years went by and we got closer and closer. We were so happy together. We forgot about the war and all bigots, and all the anti- simitists. It was like the war wasn’t even going on. Finally in 1945 the war ended and Edith and her family could once again smell the fresh air. We were all so happy. Everyone was parading through the streets. Germany was once again a happy place. To this day Edith and I are still friends. We are happily married and have children and grandchildren. We make up for our lost childhoods by watching our children and grandchildren grow up.
