Dove
by James Shammas (Age: 44)
copyright 05-18-2006

Age Rating: 7 to 127

Sometimes one cannot see through the air
The very thing or person one is looking for.
It begins to grunt, moan, groan and howl,
Louder or softer than your ears can hear,
So much so, it is deafening,
Like it was never there-- never.

You

Listen and grope with tight-clenched fists,
Pounding on the padded walls
Until you hear the knocking-- a gentle tapping,
The silence stopping. It stops for you. It stops
For the sound of one lone dove: its cooing hum,
A falling murmur, a winging whisper.

Go in.
Reach down.

Whether lost or
Never nurtured,

It still is yours.

This could be a comment on my life; seeking a soul I never knew I had, but finally finding it in the joy and sanctity of writing.

Go in.
Reach down.
Whether it was lost
Or never nurtured,
It still is yours

The whole piece sounds like a wonderful koan to me, but especially the last line.

What is it that is always mine -my nature!

Anyway from a koan point of view, I only have an intuitive understanding of this piece.

I read this piece and imagine the beauty of Sidhartha's eyes.

Bravo!

The flow of silence in your words pulled me straight down to the bottom of the page. As I read this to myself, your poem sounded a little ghostly (not a bad thing). Excellent work!!

Another good write with hidden messages (at least for my mind), but good never-the-less. Do I detect one locked in an institution, in padded-cell, hearing things that are not there?
I don't know; just my take on it, but you know I often have trouble with poems that are not completely simple and open.

Until you hear the tapping, a gentle knocking,
The silence stopping. It stops for you. It stops
But for the sound of one lone dove, a cooing,
A soothing hum, a murmur, the faintest whisper.
Go in. Reach down.
Whether it was lost or never nurtured,
It still is yours.

You are so right! I have nothing to add... Just sigh and a smile of hope!
Thank you for such a wonderful poem!
Irina.

I got goose bumps. Very nice rhymes, just rolled off my tounge. Very good write, very good right, I had to say that twice. I love reading peoms that rhyme, it helps me pass this quiet time. I sit with a blank screen, until in find this thing that's inspiring me. Great write, good job, thanks,

Gina
