The Storm

  The Storm

I look up in wonder at the comforting blue of the sky, the soft white of the clouds. I gaze to the south, basking in the warmth of the bright sun hovering above me. But alas, nothing lasts forever. The wind starts to pick up. The young trees seem to converse amongst themselves. They know what is in the skies to the North, behind me. In unison, they nod their heads in agreement. The storm is fast approaching. The ducks who had been silently floating on the glass surface of the water are now coming ashore, for the glass has been shattered. The egret, who had been searching for that special morsel in the shallows of the pond has now also come ashore, waiting for the storm to pass by. It's movement is so swift. There is no time to try to out-fly it.

The strong winds bring with them the dark clouds of the storm. The sunlight cannot penetrate these clouds. The blue and white on the horizon is the only proof of the sun in the sky. The large raindrops follow the clouds in and begin their assault on all those that remain outside. But soon the sound of the rain is replaced by the sound of pellets. The egret slowly approaches the shelter of bushes nearby, while the ducks sit out in the open, the hail relentless in it's attack.

The storm lasts an eternity of five minutes. It ends almost as suddenly as it began. Life begins to return to normal, awaiting the sun to recapture the sky above.

Very nicely done. I too liked your phrasing... the ducks leaving the broken yet still pond was nice. I did not know what the word egret meant until I looked it up. I thought you were just spelling the word regret wrong. Ha Ha. I learned a new word today thanks to you.
