The Challenge of a "D" Word
by Deone Wiley
copyright 05-27-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

What "D" word do I choose?
Which word do I use?
Desert, dessert, determination,
derelict, Death, divination?
Ah! There is one we've always heard.
T'is such a common negative word.
DON'T!
You heard it so much as a kid,
You swore you never use it;
but when your children came along
Oh, how often you abused it.

Don't do this. Don't do that.
Don't be naughty. Don't spat
with your brother. Sibling combat
is not allowed here.

Don't laugh. Don't cry.
Don't giggle. Don't sigh.
Don't go. Don't stay.
Don't hurry. Don't play.
Don't run. Don't walk.
Don't whisper. Don't talk.
Don't shout. Don't yell.
and don't ever, ever kiss and tell.
Don't squeeze the dog;
and PLEASE
don't drop the baby!!!

I'm sure that I could think of more,
but that would label me a bore.
Don't don't the world. It's common sense.
Calm down. Don't be intense.
And as your children say today.
Chill out, man! Chill out.

Children are like sponges, soaking up everything they see and hear. Most of us, grew up being molded as clay, being told what to do, when to do it and how to do it. As grown-ups, we continue to hear it from our peers, family and spouses! I love the way you presented this! The imagery is fabulous and the fluidity is frantic and frustrating, just the way it's supposed to be! Yes, let us all chill, and live life a little slower!
