The Elusive Meaning
by Richard Reed Jr
copyright 05-31-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

half-time days spent
seeking
the elusive meaning

the walking dance
forever winding down the path:
ways of choices

the only meaning
to the dance
is the dance itself

the killers of wisdom
never reckoned
until the dance is arrested:

in its tracks
we hunt the light as
darkness stalks the hunter

never noticing
until the last
peak is reached

we are alone here
in the midst
of a desolate barrenness

a few feet down
the mountain-side
it grows

one huge plain
strawberry wild
as they come

in her beautiful ugliness
the most loving
lovable strawberry

touches our masculinity
as we reach out for her
slipping

over the edge with her
taste on our lips
we understand

the true worth of things

this is exquisite... like a long, delicate icicle before it becomes ponderous and ordinary.

the very style of this poem, not merely its content, is slinky and sly, like a fox peering through the tall grass. it is like wisps of smoke from a hidden smoulder...
