The Chase
by Sammy A. (Age: 17)
copyright 05-23-2007

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Esa Niemi stepped quickly along the bridge near the ravine. If not for his vanilla-colored skin and the consistent creaking of the rickety bridge, he would have been nearly invisible to anyone else outside. He moved to the side of the bridge and looked into the small river, which covered the sound of his footsteps thanks to its continuous flow of water. He felt somewhat disappointed that there was no moon shimmering on the surface.

Esa turned back toward his destination but didn't go on. He ran his tongue nervously over his lips and turned the other way, precariously walking in that direction. For a brief second he stopped and listened. Shoes thumped on the wood behind him, then... silence. He started again, this time a bit faster than before. He dared not to look back; didn't need to look back, for he could just feel the stalker that loomed behind him. A sense of fear surged through him, momentarily controlling his body, making his steps faltering and clumsy.

Esa broke into a sprint toward a clearing, which was a shortcut to town, The shuffling sounds he and his pursuer made in the grass stirred up the crickets and fireflies and sent other creatures scurrying through the field. Grass whispered underfoot with each step, making it sound like the stalker was right on his heels.

He let out a terrified cry as he felt his sanity diminish.

Finally up ahead he caught sight of the beginning of a sidewalk. He silently pleaded for his body to go faster. He heard his feet hit pavement. Light shone down on him from a street lamp; he tripped over his own feet and plummeted to the ground. Perspiration and the moistness of the midnight air mixed together on his skin, dripped down his neck when he turned behind him, seeing nothing but shadows as he sat in the protective light...

I do this all the time. Nice work. very Vivid. <--alliteratiuon
Personally I assume whoever it is hid or is not able to be seen by mere moratl eyes. Of course I also check to make sure that no one is hiding behind the shower curtain whenever I enter the bathroom, so maybe I'm a bit paranoid.

eh,eh,eh

I can relate to that. An imagined scare is sometimes worse than the real thing. Excellent idea, excellent poem.

I also liked the ending.

Technically, your words and phrases were well-chosen and well-placed. The images were very vivid and descriptive.
