Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ~Lamentations 3:22-23
When life is so complicated, so complex
Pain so real that your breath catches in your chest
And you can’t go on until it passes again
Those “Sunday School” answers seem trite
Incomplete, insufficient to the task before them
Too simple to answer the difficult questions
Where is God when it hurts, when you ache?
Why did He allow this heartbreak to strike?
What do I have to do to make Him love me again?
It never occurs to us that there might be purpose
A greater plan in the midst of our greatest pain
His arrow protruding from our hemorrhaging heart
That His mercies refuse to leave us unchanged
And He might need to break our stubborn will
To rebuild our broken spirits hungering for more
That God is working for redemption of even the worst
That Messiah is weeping compassionately for us
He never stopped loving us, He never will
Until we step out from beneath our crushing pride
Pour out our anguish from suffering souls
Reveal even our anger and confusion to Him
No answer will satisfy, nothing will seem complete
And we will struggle still in seeming solitude
Blind to the Savior longing to set us finally free
Where is the loving God we heard about as children?
Where are these supposed unfailing compassions?
Will I ever see the dawning of a new morning’s mercies?
And then we turn, desperate, shattered, hopeless
Afraid to even dare think He might have an answer
So tired of the endless pain we can’t fight anymore
And He’s there; He never left; He’s ready for us
His two-edged sword of truth cuts to the quick
Removing the death and decay we’d allowed to grow
And He binds us to Him with His own garment
He breathes fresh life into our withering spirit
He tattoos His love on our soul, sealing us to Him
And then, only then, when our pain finally kills us
When our resistance and complacency are finally our death
When new eyes are opened in a new life, a new birth
We finally see the deeper truths that hid in simplicity
We see the incomparable folly of our own wisdom
And wisdom in the great foolishness of God
Who gave His life to reclaim ours, risked hate for love
Who allowed great pain to bring an ever greater peace
And only ever longed to love us beyond reason

Heather, i wanted to comment on this strong, insightful piece. I love your passion in this one. I truely feel what you are saying and that makes it profoundly beautiful. I will be reading more of your stuff. I like your style
Long time no hear from you-good to see you back.
This is a powerful piece. I can hear the Lord's voice loud and clear speaking through you, his vessel.
This poem is so compelling, as is the truth presented in it. It caught my attention just by reading the first line, then carried me along in the depth, intrigue and promises it offered. Your writing is so full of richness, telling of the love of God.
Wonderful!
