She's My Best Friend
by David Pekrul
copyright 06-21-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

“I have to tell you how it was,
The first day that I fell in love,
I saw her from across the room,
My little heart went pitter - boom.”

Now, that is how the stories start,
But from that style I will depart,
For when at first I met my wife,
I never thought we’d wed for life.

I never even wanted her,
I didn’t like her, that’s for sure,
I thought she was a little brat,
She thought I was a little rat.

And we could never be real friends,
But that’s not where the story ends,
For soon I really noticed her,
And then I fell in love for sure.

For when she took my breath away,
I knew that I would always stay,
And then I asked her for a date,
She said “Okay, but don’t be late”.

And soon we made ourselves a home,
And from that time our love has grown,
Now we’re together ‘till the end,
I love that girl, she’s my best friend.

"I love that girl"

What a lovely line, David!

I've read a few poems about your wife, and I like the way you do it!
Happy story without ending...
Thank you for such a warm gift!

I dated a guy like that once...we fought through most of 6th grade, and then became friends, and eventually dated.

And then he told me how he wanted to put a thin blade in his hat so he could throw it and cut heads off like in the video game. Even pulled his pocket knife out to show me how sharp the blade would be...on our walk home from school...where knives were ground for expulsion.

I didn't marry him. But it's neat to hear that some folks have successful versions of that story!

I thought that the beginning was kind of sad, along with other parts such as:

I never even wanted her,
I didn’t like her, that’s for sure,
I thought she was a little brat,
She thought I was a little rat.

I love that about poets like you. You have a VERY unique mind for writing poetry and I wonder....Will I ever become a poet, with as great a mind as you? I don't think so! You're as good as PnP can get! Keep up the good work, and good luck in the future!
