The doctor had removed the dressing and bandages from Lucien's arms before he slowly shook his head. "Your back and arms healed nicely, but I'm afraid there's not much we can do about the scars. Plastic surgery is always an option."
Lucien nodded. "Thank you, Doctor."
The doctor nodded as he walked away. A moment later, Kaitlin entered the room.
Lucien smiled. "Hmmm, you're quite a sight for sore eyes."
Kaitlin grinned. "So are you." She wrapped her arms around his waist. "As each day passes, I become more and more glad you're human now." She took his hand in hers. "There's a look of joy in your eyes whereas before there was a look of constant sadness in them."
Lucien's smile faded. "Yes." He frowned. "I remember seeing all those youths dressed up in black. Goths, I think they're known as, or vampire-wannabes. If they had actually lived as one, they would want that kind of life . . . a life that isn't a life at all."
"Well, that's over now." Kaitlin wrapped her arms around his neck. "We have a whole new life ahead of us."
Lucien smiled. "Speaking of which . . ." He tenderly took her left hand in his . . . "what's your ring size?"
Kaitlin's eyebrows rose up in surprise. "What are you saying?"
"Well . . . oh, I'm never good at surprises. I may as well as come right out and ask." Still holding her hand in both of his, he got down on one knee and looked up at her. "Kaitlin Smith, I love you. Will you give me the honor of being my wife?"
With tears in her eyes, Kaitlin smiled as she quickly nodded, unable to speak.
Overwhelmed with joy, he grabbed her in his arms and kissed her passionately.
A year later . . .
The wedding had turned out to be a beautiful ceremony. Kaitlin wore a simple yet elegant white gown while Lucien had rented a tuxedo. Jane was Kaitlin's matron of honour.
Lucien had surprised Kaitlin with two tickets to Paris, France. It felt awkward to be in his birth country at first, but afterwards he was just simply amazed at the changes since the last time he was here so many decades ago.
They made love wildly and madly that night. Once they were done, they lay in one another's arms, tangled in bedsheets before Kaitlin looked up at him. "I thought you said it's been a long time since you've been intimate with anyone," she said in a teasing voice.
Lucien arched an eyebrow. "I suppose I don't have to ask if it was good for you."
Kaitlin laughed. "With the way I was screaming, I think it was perfectly obvious." She moved closer to him and kissed his naked chest. "You were incredible."
He kissed her on the head. "So were you." He embraced her more tightly. "Do you think it will always be like this?"
"I'm sure it will be, Lucien." She looked up at him and saw a worried frown on his face. "Don't worry, Lucien. Mariam can't hurt us anymore."
"What makes you think I was worried?"
Kaitlin shrugged.
A long silence drifted between them before she squealed in delight as he tickled her.
***
It was so dark and misty that Lucien couldn't see where he was going. All he knew was that he didn't feel at all comfortable here. He wanted to bet back to Kaitlin as soon as possible.
Suddenly, he saw that the coulds were parting and fading. When his vision cleared, Lucien's mouth fell open. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
He saw a mirror-image of himself, dressed entirely in black. His hair, facial features, everything--looked entirely like his own.
That is, until the man looked up, and Lucien looked into his eyes. They were so filled with demonic evil that it filled with Lucien with horror.
"What do you want?" Lucien demanded.
The man didn't say anything; his eyes only glowed a deep red color. When he grinned at Lucien mockingly Lucien saw the all-too familiar long, sharp fangs . . .
***
Lucien then awoke, startled, panting, and gasping for breath, chilled with fear.
"Lucien," Kaitlin whispered as she sat up with him. "Lucien, what is it?"
Lucien looked around and closed his eyes with relief. He rested his head against hers. "It was just a dream--all just a sick, horrific nightmare."
Kaitlin took his hand in hers. "Oh, dear, you're trembling. Do you want to tell me about it?"
Lucien shook his head. "I'm only sorry this happened tonight of all nights."
Kaitlin kissed his cheek. "We have our whole lives to make up for it. Let's lay back down."
They did so in each other's arms as Kaitlin comforted him. It wasn't long before she fell asleep.
Lucien, on the other hand, spent the rest of the night awake, terrified to go back to sleep.
