The Day the Sun Went Down
Part VI
by Susan E. Eskdale (Age: 38)
copyright 10-10-2001

Age Rating: 7 to 17

Shelby stretched and yawned; it sure had been a long day. Usually when she was concentrating on a problem or working on proposals the day would fly by quickly. Not this day, it was going to last forever or at least that is how if felt.

The mathematical formulae were swimming through her mind, not one making sense in the least. In frustration Shelby crumpled a piece of paper and threw it into the wastebasket, perfect basket she said to herself. With fondness of youth and days when she could play outside and didn’t have to work; youth is truly the gift that we never seem to take advantage of and then regret that we had been so foolish to squander our youth away.

For a moment her mind drifted, things always felt so much better in memories. The thought that a wool sweater made one feel warmed in the same manner that a hug from loved one could accomplish. Walks in the fresh air were always so wonderful; it was felt good to breathe the cold air during the fall. Springtime brought the wonders of gentle mist and crisp fresh air the feeling of ‘freshness’ would serve to envelope one in a feeling of renewal, the new season would provide so many wonderful gifts.

Shelby was abruptly brought back into reality when the phone rang; she jumped when the phone rang, there were no other sounds in the office. Nobody was crazy enough to be in the office on a day like today. The only question would be who was on the line. She hadn’t told anyone how late she would be working and so the call felt unsettling even before she picked up the receiver.

She heard a masculine voice, which said ‘I have to meet with you, I have information you need.’ Shelby responded the only way she could think of at that moment ‘Who are you?’ The caller indicated that he was going to remain nameless for the time being and suggested that Shelby meet him at the old football stadium in an hour’s time.

Shelby felt a knot forming in the pit of her stomach as she agreed to meet the mystery man. The stadium was a full thirty minutes away from the office. If she started tidying her desktop she might actually get there on time. A feeling of apprehension settled deeply within Shelby’s being; what could be so important that he didn’t want to identify himself?

Her mind raced as she checked to make sure she had put all the data and figures back into her briefcase. Leaving her office she turned out the light and headed towards where she thought she had parked the car. Shelby was so absorbed in her thoughts on the way to work that she really didn’t notice where she parked, she just walked toward where she thought she left the car. To further complicate the situation, she was obsessing about the meeting at the football stadium. Not only did she not know where she parked her car she was not watching as she passed through the parking lot and walked right past her own car. It was not until she had walked two city blocks that she realised she was going nowhere on the fast track, turning back toward the office Shelby made her way through the parking lot and kept her eyes out for her car. She couldn’t afford to be late for the meeting.

I don't know if it is wise to meet a mystery man.

Seems like scientists are like the proverbial absent minded professor....I hate to admit, I misplace my car these days....waiting to find out what this stranger has to tell her...
