The Shirt

  The Shirt

Daddy had a favorite shirt
He wore it Saturdays
I loved to see him in that shirt
He wore it many ways

He wore it buttoned down the front
Or sometimes over tees
He paired it with some denim jeans
Or with his old khakis

Sometimes he would tuck it in
Or leave it hanging out
To watch him move around in it
Was cool, without a doubt

The color of this shirt was blue
Just like the sky in hue
It made the color of his eyes
Seem like a darker blue

One day he decided that
His shirt was just too worn
A button gone, the cuffs were frayed
The hem was slightly torn

I asked him for that shirt that day
To wear it when I slept
When he handed it to me
I swear, I almost wept

My father passed on years ago
His shirt is now retired
It's folded up and put away
It's usefulness expired

But every Father's Day it's washed
I wear it with a tee
And pair it with some denim jeans
Or with my old khakis

Very moving indeed. I have an old CPO jacket of my dad's. It still smelled of him long after he was gone. It's been 10 years now, and I wear it every winter. I cozy up in it like a baby with a 'blankie'. :) It is blue like his baby blues too.
It reminds me that he waited until the holidays were over before he died... I think he did it on purpose... he loved the holiday season. And, he even died on his favorite day.. Elvis Presly's birthday! (my dad did a mean 'hunka hunka burnin' love' when I was a kid.. he even had a white suit!) I think I'll have to put the rest in a story on my own page! lol

This poem is absolutely wonderful. It touched me deeply, for I still remember my father’s scent. It is well crafted and unpretentious. The imagery is subtle but powerfully conveyed. I honestly choked, because it reminded me of my father in his death bed…

Hi BJ,

This was truly a great poem. I, of course loved the story and the sentiments therein. It flowed very nicely-music to my ears, and rhymed wonderfully. It was my pleasure to rad it, and my honor for its submission to my contest.

Thanks so much,

Rich

B... Very personal and real. Its funny how we save things, maybe to remind us that the memories are real. I found myself remembering my folks. Greg

Lovely- I slept in one of my Dad's flannel shirts when I left home for the first time because it was the way to miss him less. I can relate to this. It's easy to imagine, and the wording flows well.

This is very cute. Good luck with the contest.

Beatrice: This is really an engaging and charming poem, filled with pathos as well. It was done with style and tenderness and I found myself remembering my own father and his favorite hat. Wonderful piece.
Regards,
Gregory
