Things I Didn't Say

  Things I Didn't Say

If only I had said to you
The things I felt inside.
Like how much I admired you
The times that you had cried.

You didn't know that I had watched
When you were feeling pain.
You taught me it's okay to cry.
With silence, there's no gain.

You never knew that I had seen
The pain etched on your face.
And how I wished with all my might,
That pain I could erase.

I watched you put your pain aside
When we were hurting, too.
You nurtured us and gave us love
We didn't think of you.

But now I know I learned a lot
From things you said and did.
You taught me things I've used each day
Since I was just a kid.

So even though I didn't say
I love you, Dad, I do.
And let me tell you now how much
In my heart, I miss you.

This was written for a contest, and while it didn't win, it didn't matter, because it got it off of my chest. So, in a way, I did win.

My father had severe pains in his legs, and yet he stood and worked 11 and 12 hour days for years and years as a chef. He would get cortisone shots in his legs to ease the pain, but those caused pain also, until the cortisone worked. I remember him crying when he thought no one was looking. Yet if one of us needed him, he would always put his pain aside for us. He was a great man, in my eyes and in the eyes of my brother and 4 sisters.
Thanks so much for reading.

BJ

This is the sweetest poem I think I have ever read. I loved it so much I thought I was going to drop a tear or two. Very good, I understand your hurt!

B... I really like the phrase... "you taught me it's okay to cry. With silence, there's no gain." The emotion can be felt and the love expressed so well. Greg Kis

I like the flow of this poem. It reminded me of my grandfather. It's evocative without being manipulative. Thanks for sharing it.
