Honest Employment
by David Pekrul
copyright 07-13-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

He worked as a ditch-digger most of his life,
To care for his children, his home and his wife,
It was honest employment and all was so right,
It was honest employment for him.

Honest employment without any strife,
Honest employment the rest of his life,
Nothing was easy, but all things were right,
It was honest employment for him.

He thought he was happy with things that he had,
Though nothing came easy, his life was not bad,
His home and his children both made him quite glad,
It was honest employment for him.

Honest employment without any strife,
Honest employment the rest of his life,
Nothing was easy, but all things were right,
It was honest employment for him.

His friends came to see him and told him to come,
They said they had plans that would reap a large sum,
They finally convinced him with bottles of rum,
Dishonest employment for him.

Dishonest employment in robbing a store,
He thought they had plenty, but they wanted more,
They figured a bank was the thing they should score,
Dishonest employment for him.

Honest employment, a thing of the past,
Dishonest employment, the mold had been cast,
“One little small job and we’ll make it the last”,
Dishonest employment for him.

They never quite got to the bank from the store,
For they were surrounded by cops, by the score,
When they were arrested, they cursed and they swore,
Dishonest employment for him.

Dishonest employment, a thing of the past,
Now time in a prison, a thing that will last,
Just twenty more years, it will never go fast,
It’s honest employment for him.

Honest employment from ‘twenty to life’,
No longer at home with his children and wife,
A life filled with loneliness, sorrow and strife,
It’s honest employment for him.

More is never enough.
I think that the line to remember is 'they finally convinced him with bottles of rum'.
I am not against drinking, if you choose your company well. This is a big neon sign to me that reminds me to not let my guard down even a little in bad company.
I hope the young ones reading this take heed.
Families are torn apart in just this way.

I loved the rhythm of this piece. I can see.. even hear.. a handful of men leaving a 'pub', holding each other up as they go. Belting out these words as they stagger home to their wives after a hard days work! LOL!
I love poetry that puts an image in my head.. a scene from a play, or life itself. Even better that it has profound meaning and a lighthearted rhythym. Well done, as always.

Dave - another good one. We live in an age of instant gratification and no matter what we have we are taught that we should have more... we envy what we don't need. Greg Kis

Yep. They start out good, then somebody dares them or persuades them, one wayor another. But hey, we're only human, and everybody makes mistakes. Life would be boring if we didn't, because then nobody would have feelings, because they wouldn't need them. We wouldn't have to fight against feelings of greed and hatred, or even just holding a simple grudge. The beauty in life is making those mistakes to be what they were before you made it, except better, because God knows we're human and knows we'll make mistakes, but He also gives us the ability to make it up.

This was a really good piece I really enjoyed it... plus I waited a day and a half to read it lol... But yeah, great job!

We humans tend to take far too much for granted. This poor soul didn't know how good he had it, didn't see how bad it could get. Greed is an evil thing.
This piece makes me so thankful for the things that I have. Sure, I'd like more, but I have happiness, love, a home, a job...I'm satisfied.
Thanks! :)
BJ

Hello David: This is a great reflection on what life could be. Sometimes I wish I were in jail getting three squares a day and no responsibility. But really I'm serving 25 to life and I'm on the outside! Great hyperbole.
Gregory
