Lament for an Afghan Woman
by Maralee Gerke
copyright 10-12-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

A wild weeping wind,
Sweeps down the Afghani Mountains.
Whistling bombs fall everywhere.
Explosions rock the dusty soil.
The sun rises, red with blood,
Destruction is all around.
A woman stands in the rubble.
Her head bent in silence.
Hidden from the world, by heavy draperies.
She looks fearfully left and right.
Alienated by her present, she sees no future.
Beautiful eyes look out upon the horror,
Of husbands and children dead, maimed,or starving.
Her grief is spread over the Earth.
The women of the world,
Join her in a sisterhood of woe.
Our captive tears fall,
Feeling the same pain.
If we could meet,
We would hold each other,
Joining our tears.
We would mourn together,
For our humanity.

I can hardly speak, this was so moving, so beautifully depicted, like we are right there.

When I read in the newspaper about how the Taliban treated women I was disgusted. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age such unfair and unrealistic restrictions are forced upon these women. No matter where we are, where we live, what religeon we believe in, we all deserve to LIVE LIFE how we want to.
This 'war' that is going on does not help these women, it does though bring the matter to our attention. I and millions of others like me, hate the way that these women are being treated, they breath the same air as us, they have the same dreams as us, they have the same bodys as us, then if so much is alike, why are they treated this way?
If the women in my country were treated like this then I would be ashamed to be here.

A great write,

jm

This is it. This is exactly it. Why can't the world realize we're all "in this" (life, not war) together?
Thank you.
