Lucien checked his watch and nodded approvingly, pleased to see that his shift had ended five minutes ago. He had been working as a librarian for months now. Six weeks before that, he and Kaitlin returned from their romantic honeymoon.
Lucien had been surprised at how quickly this opportunity came for him. He was even more surprised at how much easier he was able to get the job. From what Kaitlin and Jane had told him, jobs were scarce nowadays. From what he had seen on the news, it didn't come as a shock to him.
At least it's something that keeps me preoccupied, he thought to himself.
For the past several months, he had been content and happy. He had never felt so blessed about finally getting what he had yearned for so long: humanity. However, since his wedding night, he had been plagued by terrible nightmares.
It was always about that frightening man . . . that vampire that looked so much like him . . .
Lucien sighed.
This whole thing should be left in the past, he thought. Why does it haunt me now? Why does Mariam continue to mock me even though she's now just a pile of ash? That is . . . if any of these dreams have anything to do with her.
Lucien somehow doubted that they did.
"Ahh, here's my darling," a feminine voice said.
Lucien turned to his left and smiled when he saw Kaitlin walk towards him. Just the sight of her drove him out the serious state he was in before. "Hello, darling."
"Are you alright?"
"Yes. I was just waiting for you."
The smile on Kaitlin's face faded. "What's wrong? I can see something was bothering you the instant I walked in before you covered it up by your loving greeting. Now, what is it?"
Lucien sighed--attempting to hide anything from her was useless. "I'm just tired. That's all. The problem is that we both know why."
Kaitlin gave him a concerned look. "Why did it all start?"
Lucien sighed. "I don't know."
"I wish you would tell me about it."
"Oh, no. Trust me, you wouldn't understand it. I've been having these dreams for months now, and even I can't understand it." He sighed and took her hands in his. "Let's not talk about this. We decided to go out and enjoy ourselves this evening, and that's precisely what we should do."
Kaitlin kissed him passionately and quickly on the lips. "Right. Let's go."

He walked along the streets, following a couple who had come into sight.
The man especially looked familiar. It had been centuries since he last saw his enemy, but he never forgot the creature that doomed his wife and forced the evil gift on him. In his wife's case, it made her mad.
He continued to follow the couple, doing his best to keep his footsteps quiet.
