Remember When It Rained

Accompanying quote:Quod not cogit amor?
(Is there anything love couldn't make us do?)
Martial, C.E. c. 40-104

Remember when it rained that night and for a moment, we changed the way things were?

When the summer storm began with soft gray skies and wind that whispered warnings of the rain.

And talk turned confession from past to present; and where we swore would never go we went.

When I came up against the wall of passion and made the choice to surrender to it.

Then touches began as tender brushes and words secret and forbidden were breathed

While peals of lightning arced and thunder cracked; lips touched and fire ignited, burned and scorched

Then tempest raged, the rain drummed a hard staccato and two hearts pounded out the rhythm

With no thought but pleasure, we gave, took, revealed and shook and though not complete were lovers.

The day broke quiet, cool and clear; with desire spent our blood had cooled to meet it.

Passion like the storm had overtaken reason, and left us saddened, scared, and shaken.

For in a moment blind with loneliness we traded honor for need, lust for friendship.

Now what remains is the question and if what we have left can be mended with time.

Remember when it rains, this sad keening of the wishes we wished we had never made.
