Upon a Mental Ramble
by Jaime Romans
copyright 08-22-2006

Age Rating: 13 to 127

In the quiet of a hot and humid afternoon

When the air outside was a smothering wet and heavy blanket, which doused the planned journey through a favorite park.

While listening to the drumming of a summer rain upon the porch a thought half remembered beckoned...

Soon like a visit with old friends they began to appear; old ideas and faded memories; abandoned projects and half-baked plans; bits of song and scraps of poems; odd quotes and funny lines.

Upon a mental ramble I went collecting each memory like a pebble or a shell from the shore. Revisiting the faces of those I miss and am homesick for and the special moments that bonded us.

Looking back from time to time at the footprints of my life to see my progress, the starts and stops, hesitations, backtracking, slips, falls, and times of stillness.

As will all things, life and its reality interrupted too soon and I had to put away my pebbles and shells. I took one last look at my footprints and turned my gaze onto the path I had chosen which lay before me.

And despite the wrong turns and misfortunes, the mistakes or detours I may have taken I would not change the journey I am on or the scars and bumps I have to mark the way. Changing one thing would change where and who I am and that price is far too much to pay.
