Where is the little songbird that lingered by my garden door?
I stopped going often to the gate, to wait for her no more.
I took her song for granted and now my heart's forlorn.
Return to me and sing your song to cheer me as before.
She sang her beautiful song to me, tho some had thought her shrill.
Alas, she won't return to me no matter what I will.
But I'll keep my ear bent towards the door, to listen for her still.
Come sing your song, let all be well, my charming whippoorwill.

Deb, Seasons change, and maybe with the coming year the the songbird will return with its cheerful song. If the bird has flown, maybe it has found another fan... "free as a bird." Memories will always remain. I could not help but remember a long lost pet... who can't return, except in a memory. Greg
So long as I know the little bird has not met with 'fowl' play! (snicker) See? You've cheered me already.
Have your season building your nest far away, but don't forget to sing me a song or two, ok?
Love, Mom
I don't know what to say. Wow! Those are very touching words that can get you straight in the heart. And I would like to say that I am coming home and that all is well. But I can't. I tried to come home and I was denied and I accepted that. And it isn't fair that I have to feel this guilt trip when I did'nt even know I had an invitation. I will think about it but right now I am trying to find my own place in this world and if that leads me back to you then I will be home. Great write, good job, thanks
As they say, "You don't realize what you have until it's gone." It's so sad, but true. Some things we are lucky enough to have return to us, but some we are just lucky to have had to begin with.
This is such a cute poem, with good rhythm and rhyme. It reminds me of the hummingbird that I saw for only a minute about a month ago. It was only about 3 feet away from me, and it was the first time I had seen one, other than in pictures. The great thing was that it was getting nectar from a flower next to my house!
I hear you longing voice and add mine to it.
Perhaps a duet would be as sweet as your song bird. I cannot tell you how I feel. I can''t find the words.
I think that this is just purely beautiful! We do sometimes take people and things for granted, not because we want to, but because that's just how it pans out. There is beautiful imagery here of love gone and I certainly hope it's not our little humming bird, the one that cannot stay put and flutters in the wind... I too miss her song! This was outstanding, Debbie!
