Washed Away

  Washed Away

Late one summer afternoon,
During a heavy, dark monsoon,
People crying as they pray,
Everything is washed away.

Rivers rising over banks,
Some are cursing, some give thanks,
Most are watching in dismay,
Everything is washed away.

Some are hopeful; some are not,
Trying to save the things they’ve got,
But for most, by end of day,
Everything is washed away.

Now it’s over and it’s past,
Desolation, very vast,
All around is death, decay,
Everything is washed away.

Try to pick up and go on,
(After darkness comes the dawn),
Don’t know what to do or say,
Everything is washed away.

Strength and courage are a must,
When they say, “In God we trust”,
Hearts of valour, feet of clay,
Everything is washed away.

Time has passed and they look back,
Thinking of that cruel attack,
How they felt that awful day,
Everything was washed away.

As we have come to expect from you, another well written piece.
Whether it was Katrina or some other disaster, it matters not.
The message is clear, we must go on, we have no other rational way to deal with these things.
However, with regard to 'in God we trust'. Would he not be responsible in the first place?
It's supposed to be his weather.

I assume you are talking about the victims of Katrina and/or any other person who has perished from such a travesty. I was brought down to the bones with sorrow while reading this.
I loved the repetition of the last sentence... it really puts the emotion and point to the poem!
Great Job David!
