Ranch Cracker Snack (Easy but Addicting!)
by Mary -BrytEyz- Ball (Age: 40)
copyright 09-12-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

1 Bag oyster crackers (I use two bags)
1 Packet dry powdered ranch dressing mix
1 Cup oil (I use olive or canola)

place all ingredients in a large plastic bowl with a tight-fitting lid and toss gently until evenly coated. Let stand overnight and enjoy the next day. That's it!

Sometimes I'll use one bag of oyster crackers and one back or pretzels sticks (little stick kind). Or you can add whatever else you like to make a mix.

I have found that the oil (used to help the ranch powder mix stick to the crackers) soaks into the oyster crackers pretty well overnight, but not always so with the other items I may choose to add. Thus, I add any alternate items the next day.

------------------------------

I got this recipe from an elderly couple in my congregation. We met at their home every Tuesday evening to study the Bible and once a month we'd declare a "treat night" and everyone would bring a treat. As they were elderly and she was handicapped and prone to being sick as well, they often opted to use this simple recipe and all of us at book study couldn't agree more that this is a completely addicting snack! It's one of those snacks that there's usually NONE left over after a gathering or a pot-luck. My mouth is watering just THINKING about it. Sigh... I think I'll be making it again soon.

In the mean time... here's some spiritual food for thought, as Brother John Heyboer was DEFINITELY one for spiritual food at ANY/EVERY opportunity!

Earlier today, my friend was lamenting over the injustices of the world and ultimately sighed a familiar question many ask, especially in the wake of 9-11 and other such "tragedies". She simply asked "Why?"

At first you may wonder if this is merely a rhetorical question... one not meant to be answered. You may think it's hypothetical... one simply meant to make you think. But with every blog I read yesterday, with every t.v. station I turned to, with every radio station I tuned in... it seemed to echo louder and louder. "Why?"

I, too, was greatly affected by many trials in life... and 9-11 was no exception as I was on a plane that morning, was grounded half way across the US and stranded for a week, and had to board a plane with trembling legs and knocking knees a mere week after the 9-11 attacks to FLY back home. I wrote about it at the following...

When I found MYSELF asking "Why?"... I looked to the Bible for answers. I found that I was not the only one who was distraught by events taking place around me. In ancient times, the prophet Moses got so discouraged that he said to God: "Please kill me off altogether, if I have found favor in your eyes, and let me not look upon my calamity." (Numbers 11:15) Fleeing from his enemies, the prophet Elijah exclaimed: "It is enough! Now, O Jehovah, take my soul [life] away." (1 Kings 19:4) And the prophet Jonah said: "O Jehovah, take away, please, my soul from me, for my dying is better than my being alive." (Jonah 4:3)

So, it's not just me... and it's not just these times we're living in (though, granted, they do seem to be getting worse as time marches on.) I also can't help but realize and admit that this world and the people in it leave a lot to be desired at times. Even the Bible tells us NOT to trust the world or man. In Psalms 146:3 it says "Do not put your trust in nobles, nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs."

So, I will keep my family, my friends, the families of the fallen, the survivors, and everyone in my prayers. Until the time comes when God sets all things straight (Ps. 37:29 - The righteous themselves will posses the earth, and they will reside forever upon it."), I will continue to not get despondent over the injustices of the world.

Instead, I will remember that all this badness comes from Satan. "The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one." - 1 John 5:19. (See also: John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; 2 Cor. 4:3,4) As to WHY... you'll find many answers here:

Why Does God Permit Suffering?

Ha-ha, I just went to my kitchen right after I read this and went to the store to buy a couple of stuff. It was really good!!! Thanks for this awesome recipe, I'll be eating more of it!

I love this snack recipe. It's good for whenever you're a little hungry and you can just grab a handful or so (but who's counting?) and munch away! I've also brought this to our "goody-night" we have on the first week of the month and everyone loved it. Thanks so much for this handy snack!

Thanks for sharing this recipe. My mother used to make this and now that she doesn't even know what day it is, getting recpies from her is hard. (I do wish she had written some down.) I think she used to bake hers a bit, but I'm going to try this. Thanks, too, for the bit of Bible study. That's always welcome.

Hello Alma... yes, I have tried fries with ranch dressing and love them that way more than any other (unless, they have cheese... which is even better).

This recipe calls for not liquid ranch dressing... but a packet of dry powder used for MAKING ranch dressing. Yes, the oyster crackers taste great with this seasoning and the oil helps to keep the powder stuck to the crackers. It's really good and if you try it... I'd love to know how YOU like it. :-)

I love ranch. Have you tried it with fries? Really good. If you let the crackers in the ranch, won't the crackers get soggy of like you said, it keeps to it self well. Oh, well. Talk to you later.

Nuh Uh! (Cheek splitting grin) I got some! Yayayayay! There was some left over and Aunt Kathy had sent some with Mom. Yayay! And you're right... it was YUMMY! Thanks so much!

Okay, the first batch, with the garlic and dill, was very good, and I did take some to work, and they liked it. But I just felt the need to try it again and had to put in the mini m&m's. OMG!!! It was delicious, and healthy, to boot! That sweet/salty taste was awesome! It was like a trail mix with a salty kick! :) They liked that a work, even better. The problem was, I made so much, that I took some of both over to Aunt Kathie's and she and your mom loved them. I left the remainder there. It was probably gone when you got there! Sorry....

Brian, in the produce section of your grocery store there should be a display with small packets/mixes that resemble taco seasoning pouches... only these have dry salad dressing mixes (such as ranch) so you can make them yourself at home. They also have dip packets (such as guacamole and the like). If you DO try this, let me know how you like it. HOnest, it IS addicting (and my mouth is watering just thinking about it!).

Aunt BJ... wow. You went wild girl! LOL. You'd think we had a chef in our lineage somewhere or something... lol. YOur versions sound yummy too. I'll have to try them! So, did the folks at work like them? (IF you brought them to work, that is)

Your recipes never fail to make me wonder .... now why haven't I thought of this. Thanks for the ideas!

I don't know what ranch powder is, but I must say this does not sound like slimming food to me,,,,,,,,,,,lol.

09-22-2006 BJ Niktabe

I tried it, but added rice and corn Chex cereals, and added a little garlic powder and dill, but used a little less oil (olive oil)... very good.

Then I tried it again, only I skipped the garlic/dill, and added peanuts and sunflower seeds (without the shells). After adding the oil, I baked it at 275° for ½ hour, stirring every 10 minutes, then took it out of the oven and added the ranch dressing mix. After it cooled, I added granola cereal with almonds and raisins, and some mini m&m's. Now THAT was awesome!

Thanks Mary!!

Sounds like a delicious treat. I'm glad you posted this. The next time everyone brings treats to work, I'll give this one a shot. Maybe I'll add some wheat thins or some other kind of cracker. Seems like the hard exterior of the pretzel repels the oil, but it would probably soak into most crackers, and maybe some chex cereal, too!
Thanks!
