Attack On The Amish
by David Pekrul
copyright 10-11-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

In memory of those killed and families destroyed, when a madman came to Amish Country, October, 2006

Now, what was the point of this horrible crime?
(They sing Amazing Grace),
In Lancaster County, and so out of line,
(They sing Amazing Grace),
Attacking the Amish, a people of peace,
(They sing Amazing Grace),
Then killing himself so his torment would cease,
(They sing Amazing Grace).

The Amish, so gentle, so good and so kind,
(They bow their heads in prayer),
A more loving people you never could find,
(They bow their heads in prayer),
A schoolhouse of children, just wanting to learn,
(They bow their heads in prayer),
For sins he committed, in Hell he will burn,
(They bow their heads in prayer).

In long lines of carriages, burying the dead,
(They're seeking to forgive),
"The Lord is my shepherd", is what they hear read,
(They're seeking to forgive),
As soon as it's over, they're back to the land,
(They're seeking to forgive),
Like brothers and sisters, they live hand-in-hand,
(They're seeking to forgive).

They didn't deserve it, was nothing they did,
(They live a quiet life),
For violence and murder are things they forbid,
(They live a quiet life),
As days become months and the months become years,
(They live a quiet life),
They'll always remember this day with their tears,
(They live a quiet life).

Aww this is really sad, mom picked up a magazine and I was going to read about it, but I not so sure I want to, that sounds really sad. I don't how people can go around killing people like it's nothing, because someone who does that, you'd think they weren't human or something.

Anyway, this was a really great right, I love the little extra lines you put in there in brackets, it makes it pretty original.

Normally I'd do the usual nitpick routine, but I can appreciate a eulogy when I see one. Really, I didn't think anybody had anything against the Amish. Your dedication to this incident is thoughtful and admirable.

I would still rethink a few lines just to polish it up a bit, though. Remember to prefer the best word over the best rhyme.

I think that this is an excellent tribute to a people that seem out of place with this world we live in. I keep asking myself, how can someone be so willing to forgive their brother, for such an unspeakable act of savagery? They are a special people indeed! I could feel the pain these wonderful people are going through, because of this poem. I can see them praying and forgiving as well, David. You did an excellent job with the construction of this poem and I commend you for this tribute.

A moving epitaph for those tragic children, yet more to swell the numbers of the senseless daily slaughter.
To me it begs the question. How could a loving, all forgiving, all knowing god allow this to happen.
What had these poor children done to be deemed worthy of this fate.
It makes no sense.
It is repeatedly stated by the holy men that their god moves in mysterious ways. In other words they have no idea either, but they are good with B.S.
