The Chosen - A New Beginning
Chapter 5
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 10-17-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Charlotte went to her room and sighed, knowing that Phillippe wanted to be alone. It was clear to her that something happened to upset him otherwise he wouldn't dismiss her so abruptly.

Charlottee stared at the hateful scar on her throat--a result of which happened to her years ago. If it hadn't been for that event, she would be able to use her full voice . . .

Of course, there was no dwelling on that.

Sighing, she changed into her pahjamahs and curled up in bed, holding a book in her hands.

She hoped that once she was asleep, she wouldn't be having any dreams tonight.

***

In his dream, Lucien was in an all-too familiar setting. To his horror, he knew he wouldn’t awaken any sooner than he normally did.

Lucien then stopped, rooted in his spot when he saw the vampire—the one that looked too much like him—standing several feet away from him.

“What do you want?” Lucien demanded.

The vampire image of him then revealed his red eyes and long, sharp fangs.

***

Kaitlin awoke when she realized Lucien was tossing and turning next to her. When she realized why, she began shaking him, hoping to awaken him.

***

“Who are you?” Lucien demanded. “Why are you after me?” Lucien demanded.

“Vengeance,” was all the creature said. The voice sounded strange to Lucien’s ears. It was so odd that this vampire could look almost like his twin and yet sound so different from him: even the accent sounded different. The vampire’s voice was much deeper and was more of a Scottish descent.

“For what?”

“Destroying a loved one.”

Lucien stared at him, wondering what he could have meant when he suddenly felt an iron grip of the vampire around his throat. The creature was so fast, Lucien didn’t even see him approach. A moment later, he felt himself being lifted.

“You should never have killed her!” he shouted. The smile was replaced by an angry grimace. “Now you will die a painful death.”

“NO!”

Lucien felt the grip on his throat being released being he fell to the ground. When he looked up, he was stunned to see another vampire, the bearded one who had attacked him and Kaitlin the other night, shove the villainous creature out of the way.

“Go!” said the bearded vampire. “Leave this place at once!”

***

“Lucien!” Kaitlin cried, violently shaking Lucien awake.

Lucien’s eyes then shot open, screaming before he looked around the room.

“Lucien, calm down,” she said, holding him. “You’re awake now.” She breathed in a sigh of relief. “Goodness, you were tossing in your sleep and screaming! You frightened me!”

Lucien sighed, gasping when he realized that she was staring at his throat. “What’s wrong?”

“You have bruises on your neck,” she said. “It looks as though someone has been choking you.”

Lucien froze, remembering when the evil vampire in his dream gripped his throat.

“Lucien, I want you to tell me about these dreams of yours,” Kaitlin said in an insistent voice, “and I want to know now.”

Lucien was silent for a moment, wishing he hadn’t awakened her.

***

Philippe’s eyes shot open, his heart pounding.

Lucien DeNieux. That was the name of the mortal he had almost killed. Sure enough, his nemesis, Damon Simone wanted him dead.

Just like Damon himself needs to die, Philippe reminded himself. One way or another, the sooner the better, he must die.

This was well written. Nasty nightmares, however, I have a feeling they are not really nightmares. Somehow Lucien is actually experiencing all that is happening in his sleeping state. On to the next and can't wait!

Who was it back in the comments of, I think, Chapter 2 who said, "YIKES!" This is double YIKES! I'm anxiously awaiting the next chapter. Great story, Natalie Jackie
