Walk Away
by Leigh G. (Age: 14)
copyright 11-25-2006
Contest Winner

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I'm the one who walks away
I'm the one who never sticks around to hear what you say when I'm turned away
I'm the one who breaks hearts
I'm the one who doesn't ever follow her heart
I'm the one that follows rationality only
I'm the one who seals away the emotion called "love"
I'm the one who wants to be as strong as possible
I'm the one who walks away...
I'm the one who never wants to hear you say, "I love you"
Watching the waves crash against the jetties, and tide suck away and deliver sand,
Visions that resemble memories haunt me
Memories of the pain and suffering I leave in my wake hover near
Hello is so much easier than goodbye,
Not everybody can set their mind to saying goodbye without looking back...
Words that I can't forget,
"I love you"
A quote I'll never let myself say
The words you finally told me that day,
Words that haunt me today
When you said that...
I simply walked away

This is a poem of yours that I've wanted to read for a really long time and I didn't get the chance until now. I'm glad that I did read it. It's amazing. I really love it. I'm not good at long comments, I'm sorry to say, but I try to say what I feel. Great poem! I'm going to try to read and comment more now that I'm back online!

Tis has to be one of your best works. I put up a strong face at times that seems so fake, and pushes people away, and its someting I do without thinking now, and I hurt others. Your work is really well done. I'd like to be friends if its okay with you. You seem like a nice person. Your poems are amazing.
Keep writing, I found no problems at all.

Leigh, this is absolutely powerful. I'm amazed at its strength. Reading it, I felt a stab of loneliness deep in my gut. I well remember from earlier in my own life what an awful feeling it is to be burned by love, and I swore I'd never let it happen again. (Of course, now I've been married to one woman for thirty-five years and I've said "I love you" countless times and had it said to me times beyond counting, so things can change.) If only I could have received a piece such as this when I was teaching! Terrific! I look forward to your other work. Read some of mine and tell me what you think, if you want. Great stuff.

This reads like a declaration of someone who has made a decision about their lifestyle, someone who won't let herself get tangled in silly human affairs.

And yet....I can't help but sense a twinge of regret. A machine that understands love, out of protocol passing up its one opportunity to experience it, and maybe now knowing that it was a mistake. Sometimes protocol isn't the right course.

Of course, I'm sleep deprived, so who knows what I mean.

Beautiful... Such a lonesome and strong feeling it leaves. Its going to be hard to choose the winner.

It's quite difficult to express what I think about this poem. It's simply profound, strong and solemn. Yet, it's so lonesome. I would never be strong enough to write like that. Fantastic write!

P.S. No spelling errors! Huzzah!

I want to send this to someone so badly, but I can't bring myself to. The day she said "I love you" and all I could do was say "I'll call you back" and never did...I was too afraid. Too determined to be rational. Too afraid of saying goodbye. Too afraid of investing myself and losing myself and feeling that pain.

This, Leigh, is an amazing work. Your poetry has gotten to be mindblowing, and reading this is like reading something from my own life. Breathtaking...
