No Intelligent Life
by David Pekrul
copyright 12-11-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

“There’s no intelligent life down here!” the little Martian said,
While studying the ways of Human life,
“For Brother fights with Brother over things that neither want,
And people’s lives are filled with pain and strife.”

“Though some are blessed with many things, they seldom give their share,
And others spend their days in poverty,
And some are so addicted by their drugs and alcohol,
Yet all the time they’re thinking they are free.”

“There’s no intelligent life down here, at least that’s what I thought,
Until I saw a creature, very small,
It seemed the weakest of the weak, and could move about,
It could not walk, but sometimes it would crawl.”

“It looked like other Human life, but on the smaller side,
It trusted others for its wants and needs,
But it was pure and innocent, untouched by things around,
And didn’t share in other Human deeds.”

“I found intelligent life down here”, the Martian did exclaim,
“It’s found in something that is called a “child”,
A thing that causes all to smile, forgetting all their woes,
A little child, meek and very mild.”

“If only all of Human life could learn from this small child,
The world they make would be a better place,
And everyone could live in peace, forever free of war,
And live a life where they are feeling safe.”

“I found intelligent life down here…………”

The humor,i.e. the Martian observer, only serves to drive home the point of humanity's shortcomings. Maybe not the best poem in the whole world but a very good and thought-provoking one. Thanks.

A refreshing persepective David...I believe the innocence of the child does make each one more intelligent in many ways that the jaded pessimism of an adult...this was a neat twist and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Minstrel

How funny? We all once were innocent babes. How did we forget who we are. In all the tests we put ourselves through just to so we can say we are adults, like it's something we must prove. Maybe we even think if we completely change who we are then we will feel more grown up. Wow, intellegent life in a human child. I don't think we should ever tell them. They will run all over us. LOL, I'm just kidding, ha! "kid"ding get it? kid- ing?
okay enough Great write, good job, thanks
