Broken Glass; Broken Lives
by David Pekrul
copyright 12-18-2006

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Both broken glass and broken lives,
Will cut and feel so painful,
Both broken glass and broken lives,
Leave hurt, but nothing gainful.

But bodies cut with broken glass,
Are better prone to healing,
While broken lives leave deeper scars,
The scars they try concealing.

Now, broken glass is visible,
But broken lives are hidden,
Their blood can run for all to see,
But “feelings” are forbidden.

Though broken glass is beautiful,
Its damage can be searing,
And though some lives seem wonderful,
A breakdown they are fearing.

If people walk on broken glass,
They know what they are feeling,
But those who live with broken lives,
Are left without a healing.

The first thing I notticed about this work was the rhyme. I work more with free verse and am prone to be critical of rhyme schemes; however I enjoyed this piece of work more than I expected. The verses flow quite well. There is also great truth in your words. This poem expresses the pain of locked away emotions and hidden wounds of the soul. It shows the very distinct difference between troubled people that can learn from mistakes and move on with themselves and broken people that have little hope of ever changing. I look forward to seeing more of your writtings.

I have to agree with Jim, as far as the way you master the art of poetry. I've said before how you make poetry look so simple. Your ability to write on seemingly ANY given subject in the manner that you do is, pure and simple, a great talent. I love your rhyming skills, and so enjoy reading your poetry, as I also love rhymes.
You also do a fantastic job with the rhythm in your poetry. These are the reasons I admire your work. And this poem is a prime example of those things I spoke of!

Firstly, what is so magical and ironic is how I came up with a somewhat similar title for a brief story/sketch with a different bent and context at about the same time as you wrote this very fine poem. There is no mistake about it: when one grows with people on this site, I believe we can communicate in some facinating and mystical ways that are beyond understanding. There is no way we both could have knew what the other was thinking about. Yet we wound up coming up with similar ideas and using them in different contexts! This is so, so cool!
Regarding your work, it is written with the mastery I expect from you. It also expresses well the pain that can be quite intense, even though it may be inside.

Jim
