Magic Mushrooms
by David Pekrul
copyright 12-21-2006

Age Rating: 18 to 127

I’m down in the dirt and I’m scrounging around,
I’m looking for mushrooms wherever they’re found,
(Oh, look at the pretty pink clouds in the air),
I hope that I find a few mushrooms somewhere.

I know they are healthy, or so I’ve been told,
The ones that are shiny, not covered in mold,
(A pretty blue bunny is looking at me),
I think there are mushrooms there under that tree.

I find very little, not nearly enough,
I try to find more but it really is tough,
(I think I am flying, I’m feeling so light),
Come here little mushroom, I’ll give you a bite.

I’m done with my troubles, I’m feeling okay,
At least for the moment, at least for today,
Tomorrow I’ll search for a mushroom or two,
And maybe find some I can cook in a stew.

A beautiful broth is the thing that I need,
A chemical mind is the thing that I feed,
(Now why is my elbow down there by my toe?),
I’ll have one more helping, then maybe I’ll know.

Such nice little mushrooms, they grow here and there,
(I know I had clothes on, but now I am bare),
Such fine little mushrooms, I love them a lot,
It’s too bad that others are just smoking “pot”.

Lewis Carroll and Samuel Taylor Coleridge were opium addicts, but like Brian said, they could create good literature! This is certainly amusing, David. The observations of the mushroom-consuming narrator make me grin simply by imagining an acquaintance of mine (who actually does eat hallucinogenic mushrooms) saying those things. I can find nothing wrong with this work save that it could have been a bit longer. Inserting a string of progressively stranger observations or having the narrator do strange activities could have helped, but as it is the work is quite good. Nitpicking aside, you did a good job of turning a normally serious subject into a humorous affair.

You have a knack for humorous writing. Keep up the good work!

You're on a roll this week, man. I didn't spot anything wrong with this one, tell the truth. I especially like how you slip the little offhanded observations in without disrupting the read. I suppose if I could suggest anything, it would be to see if you could have one of those in every verse, but it's actually fine the way it is. Nice work.

I do like the somewhat strange humour in this.
Well done.

Those days seem so Innocent in comparison to today.
Thanks to 'Magic Mushrooms' we have some wonderful literature.
Debra mentions Alice in Wonderland. The mushroom was the thing that inspired? the story.
Of course it's invariably the one that the elves and fairies sit on or under.
We have the little fungi growing on our golf course. It's amazing how few remember what it is.
If my memory is correct it is actually called, Fly Agaric.

They're still around, and yes, they are illegal now. Although they're still called "Magic Mushrooms" the more commonly used term is "Shrooms".

^.^

A thank you to Debra Rose for correcting the age rating on this for me.
Does anyone remember the "Magic Mushrooms" of the '60's? They were mostly used by the Hippies, and since I was a square country kid, I never used them or any other drugs for that matter. I am interested if anyone remembers these things, though.

Very cute. So what inspired this? It reminded me of a very strange version of Alice in Wonderland.

I did change the age rating on this, since I think this type of content (something that turns a more positive twist on drug use) is kind of controversial in and of itself, and that adults are more suited to not take this work so literally.
