Chilled by the rays of the pallid sun,
soft blue sheet of very hard ice
flows beneath my blades.
I cruise across the flooded and frozen meadow
taking delight in all I see,
touching the tall brown grasses,
admiring frozen blossoms,
all the pickings for a winter bouquet.
A friend challenges me to a race;
we sprint the length of the ice--
he easily wins
and makes a great show of spraying white ice crystals
at the finish--
such fun!
Beside the pond, standing idly,
heads over the rail,
two horses in their paddock
(one bay, the other dapple)
seem curious about our business
and even curiouser 'bout the apples
we have in our pockets
as we stop to visit.
The two are properly dressed for their outing
this glad afternoon
in blankets of hunting Campbell.
They whicker at us as we approach,
treats in hand,
blow horse breath in our faces
as they accept the goodies,
and later whuff when we take our leave,
our pockets considerably lighter.
We go on to explore the pond's edge
till dark, then doff our skates for snow boots
and trudge to the Jeep.
