“How are you holding up?” Kaitlin asked Lucien in a worrisome voice.
Lucien drank his cup of coffee; it was his lunch hour, and already he was drinking his fifth cup. “I’m surviving.”
“Well, just don’t strain yourself out on caffeine.” She hesitated. “Now, are you sure you won’t get into trouble with me here and us doing this kind of research?”
“As long as we’re doing this on my own time, which is my lunch hour, my boss isn’t going to care.” He studied her closely. “I can tell you’ve found out something.”
Kaitlin gave him a winning smile. “I did indeed.” She took out a couple of sheets of paper. “Look here.”
Lucien took the sheet of paper she was holding and froze: he was holding a photocopy of a painting of his so-called “evil twin”, which must have been done centuries before he even existed. He then looked at the name and date below the picture and his blood turned to ice:
Damon Simone
Date of Birth: 1028
Date of Death: Unknown
“Unknown,” Lucien whispered, out loud. “Of course; that’s because there was no body to be found.”
“Did you notice anything else?”
Lucien looked again and frowned. “Simone.” He gulped before he turned to Kaitlin. “You’re thinking that . . . he and Mariam . . .”
“Well, I’d say it would be more than just mere coincidence, wouldn’t you agree? They share the same last name, they were both vampires . . .”
“That would explain why she transformed me; at least I think so.” Lucien shuddered. “Now I have a pretty good idea why Damon Simon is after me for revenge.”
“Yet how does he manage to reach you?” Kaitlin asked. “I mean, from where?”
Lucien slowly shook his head and frowned. “I don’t know, but I have a pretty good idea who can give us all the answers we do need.”

Philippe studied Charlotte quite carefully. He could see that she had something she wanted to talk to him about, but was afraid to do so.
“What is it, Charlotte?” Philippe asked. “You should know you don’t have to hide anything from me.”
Charlotte opened her mouth to say something, but then stopped herself, afraid to continue.
Philippe wandered why she was so reluctant to tell him about whatever it was that was bothering her, but she didn’t have to. She had been having strange dreams, and she knew whom it was about.
Philippe quickly approached her, a wave of concern overcoming him. “Did he hurt you?” he quickly asked.
“No, but I woke up just in time. It’s just that . . . if he does something to me in my dreams, can it have the same result for real?”
Philippe slowly nodded. “Yes.” He hesitated. “I don’t think you should be alone any longer when you sleep.”
Charlotte swallowed nervously, a chill coming over her, knowing that her suspicions were confirmed.

He had just finished feeding; now he was completely rejuvenated.
For many decades, he had been buried under the Atlantic Ocean. During that entire time, he had lain there, under the rusting, decaying iron of the Titanic ship. Then he had come across some people swimming along there—scientists, judging from their swimming gear. One of them had come across his wooden coffin, which had been sealed shut.
Then the scientist had reached for his ring before he attacked and fed upon his victim.
That had been months ago.
Now, he looked like any other mortal; he wasn’t even as pale as he usually appeared.
Damon Simone walked along the streets, not minding the people who surrounded him. He still couldn’t believe al the changes that have taken place over the past 90 years. But then, so many changes and events happen as time goes by.
He looked ahead at the library and grinned evilly from ear to ear.
Ever since he had heard about the death of his beloved Mariam Simone, he was looking for the one that had caused her death.
Now, he sensed Lucien DeNieux’s presence.
Ready or not, Mr. DeNieux, he thought. I’m coming right in.
