What Are Words?
by Jackie Edwards (Age: 22)
copyright 03-21-2007

Age Rating: 1 to 127

What are words,
But letters on a page,
Telling stories of a dream,
Or of days long past?

What are words,
When spoken, that are given the power
To do good or evil,
To build up or tear down?

What are words,
But cherished sentiments,
Maxims of dead kings and men,
That inspire us to keep living?

What are words,
That when spoken by God,
Created the universe,
And all in it?

What are words,
That soothe the soul,
Bring peace to men,
And heal broken hearts?

His Holy Words.

This reminds me of a quote from a video game called Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. In it, Dracula says "What is man but a miserable little pile of secrets?" One can say that man is a collection of things: emotions, actions, thoughts, and so on. Words can be the same way. They can convey actions, emotions and thoughts, among other things. This ability is something that separates us from animals, though sometimes the way they are used can conceal this fact.

Words can do so much. They can heal hearts, break them, or simply rip them out altogether. You explore this aspect and make it the theme of the poem. Much like technology, words can help or hurt fellow humans, all depending on how they are used. I like how you explore the depths that words can reach, from inspirational quotes to healing hearts to sparking wars.

Words are truly versatile and you have made this point many times over. You have outlined it and have given evidence needed to back it up. The truth of your work cannot be emphasized enough. Good work!

Words are indeed powerful even for us meer mortals. With them we can raise a person up or tear them to shreds. Even unspoken words have power, its up to us how we use them.

Great work

I really loved this piece. Also on how you made it so words weren't good or bad they where both, because in life they really are. However one thign I didn't like about this poem was you never really told anybody of the emotion that all of the words have. Like for example when you writing the poem shows emotion but yet it shows many different types of emotion. I think that indeed you should possibly add something like that. Or better yet a good subject for another poem. I'm rambling now so over all a good piece.
