Since we didn’t get going until seven AM, we stopped at a rest top around eight. I was drumming my fingers on the GPS on my motorcycle as I waited for Kairi and Niketa to get out of the bathroom before I cursed,
“What the hell is taking them so long?”
“You should have some idea, you’re a girl after all.” Cloud said idly.
I scowled at him saying,
“Not a conventional one. I doubt there are many other girls with killers after them left and right. Really though, we already filled up the tanks and they’re still in there!”
“Want to check the store for your spongy circus peanuts of doom?”
“I’m nearly broke, Rei will kill me if she saw something as unnecessary as spongy circus peanuts…” I grumbled.
He chuckled saying,
“Now that the person supplying the funds for all of this is coming, you’ve got to start watching your spending, eh?”
“Exactly.” I sighed.
Did Cloud just laugh? I wondered randomly. Only time I saw him this calm, not counting conversations with his replica, was when I was picking on him for being a genie ass.
“Did you just really-” I was cut off when I saw three black cars pull in quickly and stop for gas. I felt a chill run up my spine, and I saw Niketa and Kairi emerging from the bathroom at long last.
“Did I just really what?” He asked not paying any attention to the three cars, who were followed by three motorcycles.
I heard the click of an ammo pack clicking into a machine gun and an automatic window sliding down. Cloud looked where I was too, and we saw the barrel of a machine gun pointing out of the passenger window of one of the black cars. I turned the key in the ignition and gunned it, speeding past the convenience store and grabbing Kairi by the arm, haling her up in front of me as I heard a stream of bullet being fired. She yelled, even though I ignored her discomfort.
I looked back quickly, seeing Cloud and Niketa unharmed. She also seemed frazzled from being pulled around like a rag doll. I entered traffic in a flash, weaving around the cars and shattering the speed limit clean. I looked back again, to see Cloud not too far behind…I also heard the sound of bullet against metal as out attackers followed.
I cursed and speed up. Kairi yelled again, as a bullet grazed me arm.
“Damn, damn, damn!” I cursed knowing if I sped up anymore I wouldn’t be able to weave though the cars, I already was grazing the ground when I turned distinctly hard.
I saw an exit and pulled my katana from its scabbard and waved it above my head before turning down the exit. It lead to a beside empty road, and I looked back and only the attackers followed me.
“At least Cloud and Niketa are safe for the moment…” I muttered speeding up on the empty road. It was surrounded by trees, and it started to twist and turn after awhile. I looked around frantically for another exit, and even glanced down at my GPS for a second to no avail. If I got on a straight away, I was dead. I couldn’t try any crazy woodsmobileing with Kairi with me either. I heard the sound of another motorcycle, and saw an enemy motorcycle gating on me.
I cursed and pulled out my own small pistol and looked back quick enough to fire one shot at my attacker, I didn’t know if it hit or not. Evidently it didn’t for I felt a bullet pierce my shoulder straight through. I lost feeling in my left arm a second, and veered off coarse. I was speeding off the road, and I wrapped my good arm around Kairi as fell. I landed hard on my right arm, as we rolled down the incline a few seconds that felt like a small eternity.
I opened my eyes the second I hit a tree, and saw my motorcycle a few yards away on its side. I heaved a mental sigh of relief that it didn’t come down the same way we did. It shut down automatically after collision.
I scrambled to my feet shakily, Kairi clinging to me crying.
“Are you alright?” I gasped as I lifted her up with my right arm.
“I’m fine!” She sobbed, “But you were shot! That’s how mommy died!”
I walked over to my motorcycle feeling dizzy even though I muttered,
“I’m fine.”
My attacker sped past me, and another one on a motorcycle passing fired one shot at me, I turned around quickly to shield Kairi, and I felt this one pierce my left thy. I lost me footing instantly, and landed hard on my right side, making sure she didn’t get hurt. I forced myself up, and I pushed her behind me and drew my katana as one of the cars stopped and the passengers stopped. The other motorcycle attacker, the one who had shot me stood up, and walked toward me. The woman in black removed her helmet, and stood over stopped.
I pointed my katana at her neck, making her smirk.
“You can’t even stand and you’re still trying to defend that little girl. How valiant, Akhyia Ragnarok. You really are as good as they say. But that poison Twi-LIGHT gave you is still slowing down your body from instantly healing itself.”
Things around me were swimming, and I could hardly see the woman standing before me, but I didn’t move from my defensive position. I could feel my right arm starting to shake though, making me look pathetically weak.
“She is no more harm to us.” The woman said turning around. “Let’s take her back to HQ. We’ll bring the kid too, be careful with them though.”
I forced myself to my knees, forcing my blade forward to run the woman though. She’d moved fasted than I’d been able to see, which wasn’t very hard, and our katanas met with a chink of steel to steel. With one quick swipe, she attempted to knock my katana from my grip, but I held on. Before I could block, she jumped back and than shoved her blade through my shoulder, in the exact spot I’d been shot.
My vision went black for hardly a second before I fought it. I tried not to black out completely, but it was no avail.
I woke up slowly and saw the roof of a car. I was in the back seat of a car, a pillow propped up under my head. I was half-curled into a ball, and looked around a few second to regain my bearings. My wounds and holes were bandaged, even though both my katana and pistol were gone. Big surprise, right?
There were two people in the front seat talking in low tones, though I could hear them. I couldn’t make out what they were saying though, my head was still to fuzzy. I did catch one sentence that made my head clear:
“Nikoji won’t be pleased with the condition she’s in.”
Nikoji? Maaya?
“There’s nothing we can do about that, it’s not like we’d be able to get her to come with us any other way.” A man replied to the woman who had reviled my identity to Kairi.
Shit! Kairi! What happened to her?
I though, even though I forced myself not to move.
“Still, she told us to bring Akhyia unharmed. It’s bad for us too, we need her as bait after all. Akhy is bait Trenxi will bite.”
“Lady Nikoji doesn’t know about our plan, so what does it matter?”
“Lady Nikoji will only approve of us using her as bait if she gets wind out our plan after the good things that will follow it have been completed. Trenxi needs both Ragnarok sisters, once he realizes that he’ll have to do whatever we want to get Akhyia.”
“Lady Ragnarok is a virgin too, making her even more valuable to him.”
“Exactly.” The woman replied, “Skyevi does bless the non-virgins with her power, but she will not talk to them no matter what Trenxi does to change that. Akiko isn’t a virgin, and not only is Akhyia, but she also has spoken to Skyevi before she was altered.”
“Seems like a lot of bullshit to me.” Grunted the driver. “Why does Trenxi need those two anyway? Can’t he just use Kaianoreri?”
The woman sighed saying,
“Because Kaianoreri hasn’t developed power like Akhyia.”
I couldn’t focus on what they were saying anymore, since my head started swimming again. The steady movement of the car was relaxing, in a half-coconscious way. I felt my eyes closing again, and smiled slightly remembering how good it felt to have Cloud worrying about me.
Whatever sanity I had with me was gone my that point, and my train of thought wondered to things I’d dismiss as foolish and stupid were I in my right mind. If I were in my right mind, I’d figure out who and what Kaianoreri is or was, and how the hell I was going to escape, but I didn’t have the energy to focus on much of anything…
The second I regained a fragment of awareness, I rolled over on the bed I was sleeping in onto my right side. I could never sleep on my back; I always slept on my right side, sometimes my left side but not much. I opened my eyes, and saw I was in a plain hospital room. White walls; a window on my left, door into the hall on my right, and two chairs near the door. There was also a chair next the bed I had been sleeping in, and there clean clothes and a pair of knee boots.
I sat up, the wound on my torso apparently healed since I didn’t feel any pain from it. I looked down and saw I was wearing a white sleeveless shirt and white pants, evidently hospital guard.
The door to the room opened and a nurse entered.
“Lady Akhyia, the showers are down the hall. Please bring your clothes and follow me, for the Master would like to see you.”
“Where am I?” I demanded of the young emotionless-looking nurse. She wore her black hair pined back, her eyes a similar dark color.
“Scixen.” She replied. “That is all I can tell you, the Master will tell you the rest.”
“Who’s this master?” I asked not moving, childishly wishing I had my katana.
“Please come with me, I do not want to involve security. Your wounds may be healed, but that poison is still in your body so you’re not much stronger than a normal person in you dexterity and endurance.”
I obliged unwillingly, mainly because I didn’t feel very energetic, and I was pretty sure this wasn’t Twi-LIGHT. If it were, I’d already have Trenxi standing over me to taunt me. And why would Twi-LIGHT want their poison out of my body?
I followed the nurse down the hall, remotely surprised to see nobody else was there. I entered a clean bathroom, and showered and brushed my teeth with the tooth brush and paste provided. I got dressed in the plain button up white T-shirt and jeans. Both were rather tight, which I didn’t like since I’d always worn floppy clothes. I looked in the mirror a second after showering and getting dressed muttering,
“I look like a woman…I’m not flat anymore…”
I pulled on the boots muttering,
“What a pain in the ass…my shoulders don’t stand out as much anymore.”
I pulled the pant legs over the boots, wondering what happened to my good-old Twi-LIGHT boots. These weren’t anything close to fashion boots, thank god, but even though they had nice a secure grippes I didn’t like boots that high.
I wasn’t surprised to see the door was locked when I turned the hand. I knocked asking,
“Yo! Nurse of Doom, can I come out?”
She opened the door, paying no mind to my nickname as she said in a business-like manor,
“Are you ready to proceed to the Master?”
“Whatever.” I replied. “Do I get my katana back soon?”
“That is up to the Master.”
“Whatever you say, O great Nurse of Doom.” I said, trying my hardest to be a wiseass and make her show some emotion…to no avail.
She lead me to an elevator, and handed me over to two female armed guards. They both wore black, and I couldn’t see either of their faces under their helmets. They were both a lot taller than me, which was strange since I was fairly tall. I wasn’t short at least. I usually was at eye level with most people, hence why it bothered me that Cloud was so much taller than me.
We were evidently on the twentieth floor or so, and were now going into the basement levels. I saw the basic map of the floor plan next to the little touch-screen that allowed a person to decide where they wanted to go, and saw how different it was from the layouts of Twi-LIGHT bases.
Even though these two chicks are armed, I could probably knock them both out before they realized what was going on…I could grab one of their machine guns, and make an escape…
I decided to go along with things for a little longer, even though I wasn’t sure how long. I knew I was going to make a stink in a few moments, even though I didn’t know if I’d be able to escape on my own. I’d had help on every one of my recent escapes.
I’ve been getting abducted a lot recently…it seems like that only happens when I start playing the role of the loner hero…
The two guards stood on either side of me, and as the elevator stopped one of the hooked an arm under my arms and pulled me along as the doors opened. I looked around quickly where we were, and I double took when I saw we were in the cathedral! I looked closer, than realized it was only a replica. The windows weren’t real; it wasn’t natural light. Everything was new too, there weren’t any broken pews or rot on the alter.
There was a person standing at the alter, he or she was wearing white robes. A hood covered the person’s head and face. The person turned around and said,
“Please let her go.”
I listened closely a moment, recognizing the voice. The person was definitely female, even though her voice was extremely familiar.
“Leave this room, I do not need any guards.”
“But, you’re grace-” They started,
“You are dismissed.” She said forcefully.
The guards let me go and bowed, than left. She didn’t speak anymore until they were gone and the elevator shifted into gear and they were leaving.
“It must be nice.” The woman in white said, “Being able to roam the world like you do. Not having people never giving you a moments peace for merely protection.”
She paused before asking,
“How was the real cathedral? This silly imitation is the closest to the real thing I can get now. Does the air still stay pure no matter how long it’s closed up?”
“M-…Maaya?” I stammered.
