This is a manga proposal I came up with during my free time after tennis class yesterday.
Major characters
Kojiki Shino- A typical "dumb jock" of a lad. Black hair, brown eyes and standing 5'7" tall, Shino is a master athlete but can do little else in school. On the last I.Q. test he took, he scored a 96... it may have decreased since then, since he has a tendency to butt his head against hard surfaces whenever he gets mad.
Favorite Phrase: "I'm ready to hit a homer!"
Shanaga Koba- The typical nerd. He studies obsessively if he even thinks there will be a test on something, but his paranoia has earned him the highest place in Naru Academy. After relentless goading from his sports fanatic of a father, he has decided to take up baseball in order to improve his social standing. He too has black hair, brown eyes, and stands 5'7" tall, but he wears black, thick-rimmed glasses and studies baseball manuals relentlessly... even during practice.
Favorite Phrase: "Time spent studying the opposition is never wasted!"
Namaru Isoroku- A skilled baseball player, Isoroku is immensely proud to be named for Isoroku Yamamoto, the famed World War Two Imperial Japanese Navy admiral. Like his namesake, he is no slouch in the academic department, though not on the same level as Koba. He could be a match for Koba if only he could control his gambling addiction, another trait he shares with Yamamoto. Although Isoroku is only 5'4" tall, he plays with the spirit of a much taller player. He has spiky brown hair, blue eyes and wears a white headband with the Rising Sun emblazoned on it.
Favorite Phrase: "Life itself is a gamble... what's one more risk?"
Konaho Sasuke- A "pretty boy" cut from the same cloth as Shino. Though he is of mid-level skill, he plays with the fiery spirit Isoroku displays and never quits. Sasuke is a confirmed pyromaniac and always carries a cigarette lighter in his pants pocket. He also has narcissistic tendencies and even carries a woman's hand mirror on occasion; it is red, of course. He has black hair that is parted down the middle, brown eyes and stands 5'5". Sasuke plays baseball mainly to attract girls, but he also hates to lose at anything.
Favorite Phrase: "I'm so hot..."
Kinaba Hideki- A boy similar to Isoroku, he differs from his more controlled comrade in that he has a hair-trigger temper and will fight anyone at any time. On the streets of Tokyo, Hideki is nicknamed "Kamisori" (The Razor) because of the switchblade knife he carries at all times. In keeping with his nickname, Hideki collects swords and spends an average of three hours a day polishing and maintaining them. He has spiky black hair, green eyes, and wears a bandage on his forehead to cover a scar from a knife-juggling accident he had in middle school. His height is 5'4".
Favorite Phrase: "You're about to be cut to ribbons!"
Jiboku Bakuda- He is so similar to Hideki that they could be long-lost brothers. Because of his anger management problems and hyperactivity, he is nicknamed "Bakudan" (bombshell). Instead of knives, Bakuda prefers to use his fists when someone crosses him: his reputation is such he terrifies even the hardened street gangs and ruffians of Tokyo. Bakuda plays baseball to take his aggression out on the baseball instead of people or trashcans. Like Hideki, he has spiky black hair and green eyes, but unlike his colleague, he does not wear a bandage; he wins every fight he gets into!
Favorite Phrase: "I'm a blast to be around!"
Kogitsune Yoshinata- A lad of few words who is a descendant of a family of samurai tracing its roots back to the start of the Tokugawa Era. Also keenly intelligent, he is second only to Koba in grades. As befitting his heritage, Yoshinata is an enthusiast for martial arts and kendo, but his role model is Bruce Lee. He sees baseball as a duty and plays the game with a tireless dedication that rivals that of Isoroku and Sasuke. Yoshinata has long black hair, blue eyes, and wears traditional samurai attire, even donning armor before dressing into his uniform for especially important games. He stands at 5'9" tall.
Favorite Phrase: "Duty is heavier than a mountain, but death is lighter than a feather."
Secondary characters
Kabanori Kanjo- A grizzled old baseball coach, he has been coaching the Naru Hayabusas for over thirty years.
Kanjo likes sake, the traditional rice liquor of Japan... maybe a bit too much! To his credit, he stays sober for games, but afterwards he drinks a quarter of a bottle to celebrate, no matter what the outcome. Aside from being a sake connoisseur, he also enjoys origami. Kanjo has gray hair, piercing blue eyes and is 5'1".
Favorite Phrase: "Let us celebrate!"
Matano Kasumi- A beautiful girl that is the dream date for every guy at Naru Academy. Unbeknownst to all, Kasumi has a crush on Koba and blushes every time she sees him. Her hobbies are calligraphy, origami, and dancing (especially traditional dance). She has brown hair, green eyes and usually wears a kimono decorated with flowers when she is not in school. Her height is 5'0".
Favorite Phrase: "Beauty is delicate..."
Hiryu Minako- A beautiful girl that is positively entranced by Western culture. Minako is in love with Sasuke, and he is deeply in love with her. However, both of them will not admit it when asked about it. Eschewing traditional garments, she dresses in a t-shirt, blue jeans and wears Western-style sandals. Minako also loves perfume and is especially fond of Chanel No. 5 and Calvin Klein Girl. She has long blond hair, blue eyes and is 5'2" tall.
Favorite Phrase: "Perfume is divine deodorant!"
Soryu Hitomi- A girl who is not as beautiful as the first two, but has a plain beauty all her own. The female equivalent of Koba, she studies frequently and hopes to become a robotics expert and work to design them for a major company. When she is not studying, she enjoys playing video games, especially role-playing games like The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion, and Dragon Quest and real-time strategy games like StarCraft and Command and Conquer. Her favorite action game is the Mega Man series: she dreams of one day building her heroes Protoman, X and Zero. Hitomi has strawberry-blonde hair, green eyes and is 5"1" tall.
Favorite Phrase: "Technology is the future of mankind!"
Rivals
The major rivals of the Naru Hayabusas are the Yokohama Shokis. These unsavory characters are a mix of brawlers, bullies and motorcycle gang members... and they have a reputation for pre-game antics ranging from smashing car windows in the parking lot to spraying graffiti in the bathrooms to setting fires in trash cans. Here are two of major antagonists.
Jobiko Mokuba- The leader of the roughneck Yokohama Shokis. He constantly brawls and has the scars to show for it, especially on his right fist. Mokuba is nicknamed "The Dentist" because his favorite area to attack an opponent is the mouth, and he has removed many a tooth from his many victims. In a macabre display of his fighting prowess, he wears a necklace of human teeth around his neck. Needless to say, this intimidates all but the bravest of people, and he has a long-standing rivalry with Bakuda. Mokuba has a black mohawk, brown eyes and is 5'6" tall.
Favorite Phrase: "Mayhem is what I live for!"
Kaga Kabuto- Mokuba's second-in-command. Like Koba, he wears thick, black-rimmed glasses, but unlike his intellectual counterpart Kabuto loves to fight. He applies his intelligence to finding new ways to hurt people with his judo mastery. This sadistic fellow enjoys harming anyone in his path and breaks glass and bones with equal relish. His favorite thing to do in a fight is to break limbs with a wide variety of throws and holds. Kabuto has medium-length brown hair in a bowl cut, brown eyes, and is 5'5" tall.
Favorite Phrase: "Breaking heads is my business, and business is good!"
Story
The Naru Hayabusas and Yokohama Shokis have been enemies since the end of the Second World War. For generations, their baseball teams have clashed for national supremacy in the epic struggle to prove which is the superior team. On occasion, these clashes even spilled over into the parking lots and streets of Tokyo, the destination for the Pan-Japan Baseball Cup.
Much like the famous soccer riots in Europe, the people of their respective towns have formed two hostile tribes in the tradition of their ancestors. From the cradle to the grave, each town's youth is drilled in the names and stats of its heroes and taught to despise the other team and all who identify with it. Now that a new generation of players are filling the roster of both sides, how will this multi-generational conflict end?
This is the question that will be answered in Strikeout!!!
