The Chosen - A New Beginning
Chapter 9
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 10-22-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

“I’m truly sorry about our previous engagement,” Philippe told Lucien, who was driving. “I thought you were Damon. As you can see, you both have an uncanny resemblance.”

Lucien let out a bitter laugh. “That’s unfortunate.”

“What does he want with Lucien?” Kaitlin asked, sitting in the backseat. “Why does he want him dead?”

“The same reason why I want Damon dead,” Philippe said, shaking his head in a sad manner. “For destroying Mariam.”

It took a great deal of effort for Lucien to focus his attention on the road. Kaitlin, however, noticed that Philippe was crying silently as blood-red tears streamed down his face.

***

Charlotte entered her room, and it was absolutely dark. It seems to be getting darker and darker each evening, she thought.

She turned on the lamp in her room as Philippe’s warning came into her mind: “I don’t think you should be alone any longer when you sleep.”

Charlotte swallowed nervously. He certainly knows something, she thought. Why else would he warn me in such a manner like that?

It must have something to do with the man she had dreamed about lately.

“Perhaps,” a male voice behind her said. “One never knows.”

Charlotte quickly spun around before she gasped. It was him—the man from her dreams!

“You’re so real!” she whispered.

The man stepped out of the shadows and came into view, giving her a sensual look.

She took a step backwards. “I thought you couldn’t enter a home without being invited.”

“Vampires as old as I don’t need to be invited.” Damon took another step closer.

She took another step backwards. “What do you want?” she wanted to know.

Damon gave her a crooked grin. “You,” he whispered.

Charlotte took another step back as he reached out to touch her. “No,” she whispered.

He only smiled as his eyes turned red.
Lucien, Kaitlin, and Philippe remained silent when they entered Philippe’s home.

It was moderately sized; no one would guess someone of Philippe’s lifestyle would live here.

“Here we are.” Philippe said, turning to Kaitlin and Lucien. “Try to make yourselves comfortable.” Philippe was about to go to the kitchen, but then froze.

Kaitlin knew right then something was wrong. “What is it?”

“We are not alone.”

Lucien believed him; he heard movement upstairs, and he doubted that it was Charlotte who was the only one moving about up there.

***

Damon smiled at her. “Don’t try to resist me,” he whispered to Charlotte, as he held out his hand. “It’s useless.”

Charlotte could only stare at him.

“Come to me, and I can give you a whole new life.”

“NO!”

The loud voice interrupted the two of them as Damon turned and hissed as Lucien and Philippe entered the room. Charlotte, no longer transfixed on Damon’s gaze, fainted on the bed.

“Stay away from her!” Philippe shouted.

Damon only roared at him.

Stepping forward, Kaitlin threw a vial of holy water at him.

She had missed, but just the sight of the vial was enough to send Damon screaming before he transformed into mist and floated through the cracks through the window.

Once he was sure Damon was gone, Philippe ran to check on Charlotte.

Well, I guess there must be good and bad vampires, too. The thought of a vampire having a conscience somehow destroys my image of them, but what the heck, it just makes them all that much more interesting. Keep it coming!

What an interesting story this is turning into. I love all the twists and suspense. It's great!

Ewww, that Damon's a creep! Makes me wonder, though, are we going to see the same kind of relationship develop between Charlotte and Phillipe as between Kaitlin and Lucien? Hmmm. . . I'm waiting to see! :) Jackie
