Are you a Rabbit Person?
by Robert Betts (Age: 61)

Age Rating: 7 to 127

Everyone is familiar with cats and dogs as pets. Fish and birds are also well know though less common. Rabbits are an animal which is not quite so well known. Rabbits are different from any other animal in a number of ways so saying "Is a rabbit like a dog or a cat?" doesn't really apply. Rabbits are rabbits and they can be quite adorable. If you'd like to see adorable go to my author page where I have some pictures and two videos of Usagi, my rabbit. So far he has never failed to capture the heart of anyone who has met him.

As is true with many pets there are more rabbits than humans to care for them. You are desperately needed by a homeless rabbit. He will reward you with laughter at his antics and with affection. In time he will teach you rabbit-speak. But first are you a rabbit person ?
  • Do you understand that rabbits are house pets?
  • Are you aware that rabbits can be litter trained?
  • Are you old enough to accept the responsability of a pet?
  • Are you patient?
  • Have a sense of humor?
  • Do you enjoy watching the movements and learning the language of another species?
  • Does your schedule include plenty of time at home?
  • Are you comfortable spending a lot of time on the floor?
  • Are you not overly fussy with your furniture?
  • Are you willing to rabbit-proof an area?

If you are a rabbit person you might now be thinking of getting a rabbit. Buying one from a pet store is the worst idea. Getting a baby or young rabbit is also a bad idea. Like teenagers of any species (including humans) they are a real handful. You should get a rabbit that is at least a year old. Litter training is easier to do with an older rabbit, in fact, he might already be litter-trained. So where should you get a rabbit? Here is probably one of the best places:. PetFinder.com. If you look in your area for "Rabbit" you will probably see quite a few homeless rabbits in dire need of humans.

I had, when I was younger, thought about getting a rabbit. Though most of my thoughts were to buy them from the 4-H fairs usually.

When I was growing up, we used to have quite a few rabbits that would have nests in our yard. Mainly cause we had a fence. Most animals had a hard time getting in the backyard. I always thought it was cute when we would find the nest and I would sooo want to touch it. Its good to know that the ones I did touch weren't ever going to be let go from their mom. I was told lots of times that the mom would smell the human and leave them all. But we would go back and find them all gone, not dead, just gone.

This really is a good article to know if one should get a rabbit and where they should get it from, not just the backyard.

Very good job here. Thank you for writing it.

I have thought of owning a rabbit before, but then the indescribable cuteness of cats lures me back into their camp. But reading about Usagi's antics and reading this advisory may have shifted the balance a little. I like how you wrote this in a concise and informative manner that is straightforward with the reader. In fact, most of your best works have that style to them... but I for one value the direct approach you take. Moving on... like I said, this concise work has changed my mind concerning rabbit ownership.

At first I was tempted to capture a wild one and bend it to my will, but when I read about their availability through adoption agencies, I realized that I would not have to work too hard to get one. However, time is my major issue, and I am glad you mentioned that. I shall wait until I am a bit older and financially solvent before I adopt one... when I do, I shall dub it... Albert! (Or some other grand name...)

As far as grammar and whatnot, William has already commented on most of it, but for a second opinion, I would say it is simple and easy to understand. For something of this nature the value of simplicity is not to be underestimated! Good work and thanks for the advice!

This is very good. It is well-presented, coherent, and the beginning and endings are nicely tied together. Quite a bit of information is presented in a relatively short space, and that is always good with a topic like this. I also like the "low-key" manner of presentation and the language used. It was basic, direct, and can reach the age level you specified very well. On the technical, the only thing my "critics salty pen" could find was underneath the bulleted items, the word "thinging." Did you, perhaps, intend to write "thinking" but your keyboard mis-behaved? Mine does. All the time. This is nicely done!

William :)
