Who Do You Hate?
by Leigh G.
copyright 10-02-2007

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Written June 16th, 2007

Who do you hate?
The world, or a single person?
Who do you believe has caused your suffering?
Look in the mirror
Are they really at flaw,
Or have they done nothing at all?
Are you sure it is not you that's causing your suffering?

I've looking in the mirror,
And realized there is no one to hate
There is no liar
For the one at flaw, is myself
I suppose it was a year ago, I realized I hated myself
And now tonight, after what may be my final flight,
I understand that I do not hate you,
I hate myself

For it is I who cannot move on,
It is I who is always singing the same old love song,
Cherry blossoms pass with the seasons,
They die and are reborn again
Yet no matter how many I make the same mistakes over and over,
When I die inside,
I am not reborn
Even if I was, would things really change?
Or would cherry blossomes continue to rain down on me?

It is I who cannot keep a secret
Who is the liar now?
I've been the liar all along
Who said goodbye,
But still came back?
As long as I lie, tomorrow will not be better than today
And when I tell myself that in my head,
I only prove my role as the liar

It is I who causes my suffering
It is I who keeps myself up late into the night
Worrying over what is
And wishing for what can never be
Nobody has ever done anything to hurt me,
I am the one who causes my suffering
Because I have never let go

I wonder how many people I hurt,
Before I realized the only liar was me
I have nobody to blame,
I should stop pretending there is somebody causing me pain

I have looked into the mirror
And I learned who I hate
For it is I who cannot move on,
It is I who is always singing the same old love song
The only person I hate, is me

You opened this with a question, closed it with an answer to that question, but left us (me) troubled by the vision which you presented with the development. Except for the imagery of the cherry blossoms. That was a very nice use of contrasting images and emotions. Cherry blossoms, of course, being representative of fortune, well being, etc. I liked the textures achieved by appealing to so many senses, but maintaining focus on the topic: self hatred.
On the technical: the line that ends, "...at flaw.
Did you mean to write instead, "at fault?" A little bit further down, the use of "lair" is noted where it seems you might have meant "liar." And, finally, towards the end the line, "For it is i." did you mean to not use caps?
That seems to be a popular thing, but it isn't consistent with the "I" throughout the rest.
This is a good write, Leigh. Troubling, but honest, and shows the kernel of growth needed for healing. ^_~

Leigh: You bared your soul last summer when you wrote this poem. Hate is destructive, whether toward another or a race or the world. Hate toward oneself is also defeating. It's OK to love ourselves even when we don't like all the things we see. Give yourself a big hug! You are fine. You are honest. You are talented. You can run! Some can't even walk. Hey, your poem did this to me. I'm counseling you over your poem! That may not have been you at all! Now, I'll never know. Great job! Dale
