Once she was on the internet and looked up Philippe Lexieverre, Kaitlin didn’t find out very much about him. He was born in 1295 and was a well-known artist. He had sold few paintings and drawings when he was alive but many after his death. Kaitlin figured his profits had been inherited to his living relatives.
However, she did come across a very startling drawing, which must have been used as a family portrait in those days: Philippe, of course, with his wife, and child. They were all dressed in the late-thirteenth, early-fourteenth century style clothing.
It was the woman in the painting that she found to be the most disquieting: it was Mariam!
I knew it! Kaitlin thought. I knew there was something he was holding back, and it took THIS for me to figure it out!
A loud pounding reached her ears.
Frowning, Kaitlin checked her watch before looking outside. Impossible! It was still daytime. Neither Philippe nor Damon would have been able to come here.
“I know you’re in there,” a familiar voice demanded from outside. “Your car is outside, so it’s useless trying to avoid me!”
Kaitlin let out a sigh of relief when she recognized Jane’s voice although she was somewhat startled at how upset Jane sounded. She must have found out about the incident at the library, she thought.
Setting off the printer to print the picture, Kaitlin rose to answer the door. Sure enough, Jane stood out in the hallway, appearing as angry as ever.
“Okay,” Jane said bitterly as she entered. “I thought that not only am I your PI, but your friend, so as both, I’d appreciate you tell me what’s going on yourselves. I don’t enjoy having to hear about what happened at the library over the news!”
Kaitlin shook her head. “I’m sorry. So much has happened so quickly, and—.”
“What on earth is going on?” a male voice demanded as Lucien entered the room. “I was actually having a peaceful slumber for once, and . . . oh, hello, Jane.”
“Yeah, hello to you, too.”
Lucien gave her a quizzical expression before it was replaced by a look of realization. “You know about the library.”
“Yeah.” Jane sighed. “Now that I just gave Kaitlin my outburst, I just have one question, why didn’t either one of you come to me about it?”
Lucien slowly shook his head. “We didn’t want to involve you in this.”
Jane gave him a stern look. “The one thing I don’t like is when my clients hold anything out on me. I like it a lot less when my friends do it. Now if you both know something that I don’t, you’d better come clean. Got it?”
Lucien was silent for a moment before he nodded, a grim look on his face. Kaitlin didn’t do or say much to disagree.
“Good.” Jane took a deep breath to calm herself. “I somehow have a feeling this was more than just a normal break-in. Is my hunch right?”
Kaitlin nodded. “You’re right on the money. I’ve even discovered some news which Lucien doesn’t know about yet—I was doing some research while he was sleeping.”
“You did?” Lucien asked in confusion.
“Yes—though I must warn you, you may not take it lightly.”
Lucien only stared at her blankly.
Kaitlin went to the living room where the computer was. She then took out the picture she had just produced from the internet and carefully showed it to Lucien.
She was right; he didn’t take the news lightly.
“Bloody doublecrosser!” Lucien cried. “To think, I almost felt sorry for the bastard!”
“Lucien, please,” Kaitlin said calmly. “There must be more to this than we thing. We don’t know his side of the story yet.”
“Could everybody hold everything a minute and explain all this to me?” Jane demanded.
Lucien and Kaitlin did as Jane asked. When they were finally done, Jane gave Lucien a patient look. “Lucien, Kaitlin might be right. This Philippe guy might be lying, or he might not have given you the full story yet. That’s what we have to find out.”
Lucien looked the window. “Fine. But we’d better hurry. The sun is almost down.”
