Making Moments Count

by Cassie Sweeney (Age: 20)

Make each moment count,
he said to me,
I didn't realize what it meant at first,
but when he lay there dying...
Those were his last words,
his last words to me!
He said never give up,
and always come through.
Make each moment count,
because I love you.

It was all coming clear,
when he said it that day,
but not as much,
as I should say...

Then I met this boy,
who I desperately loved,
but I ran into a dilemma,
he barely knew my name.
everyday was no different.
He ignored me,
as I walked by,
and when I went to talk to him,
he'd leave me hanging,
with nothing to say.

At the prom,
I got up the courage,
to ask him to dance.
It took forever,
but I finally got a chance!
He answered no at first,
but then he said yes,
"If you do me one favor,
make each moment count."

There were those words again!
that at first confused me so,
but after a life of wondering,
the meaning did finally show.

I finally understood the meaning,
of making a moment count:
Make sure you always come through,
and do what YOU want to do,
and to trust your heart,
because if you don't,
it may just be too late,
and you'll never know,
what could have happened,
but now that you know,
to make each moment count,
I guarantee you,
there will never be a time,
when you will ever miss out.

I should have done this long ago. When I first started college, I met a cute girl named Sylvia. She was attractive, smart, and easy to talk to. At first, I couldn't work up the courage to talk to her... I was a loser with a hoopty car, no job, and little prospect of getting enough money often enough to date her. When I finally got the courage to ask her, I found out she already had a boyfriend by then! Now I have mostly overcome my sadness and regret, but every once in awhile I wonder how things could have gone if I had asked her earlier.

This poem gives a universal truth: time stops for no man. No matter how much we would like for the opposite to happen, once a moment has passed, it has passed beyond mortal control. The best advice, whether in romance or otherwise, is to trust your heart. I did not trust mine in a lot of things, and as a result I have a few regrets built up over the span of 18-23 years of age. You wholeheartedly tell us to grab the moment and run off with it if our heart tells us to.

You seem to have heeded your own advice and are happier as a result of it. Some of us have a more cautious nature than you do... perhaps you can write a companion poem for those of us who aren't as courageous? Just a suggestion. XD

Moments are all gifts which you pointed out so clearly in this poem. Nicely done! Looking forward to reading more from you. These types of poems stand out, appealing to the mind as well as the eyes.
Thanks,
Susan

This is very well done. From the opening through the development to the ending, it carries a Universal Truth--at least that's what I call it--that is seldom found in anyone's works.

This is a good piece!

Frank :)
