Squanto
by Everett (dale) Pogue
copyright 11-21-2007

Age Rating: 7 to 127

We know Lone Ranger's horse, and friend, Silver the horse and Tonto.
But few of us have heard the name Tisquantum, known as Squanto.
Squanto's life was hard and cruel; captured and abused
they took him off to England's shore where Nobles were amused.

Squanto soon proved them all wrong. They were amazed at him
This savage from New England land could soon converse with them.
New value now was seen in him; again he sailed the sea
Once brought back home to Wampanoag, from captors he would flee.

Squanto met the Pilgrims first in March of twenty-one.
He helped the Colony survive, without him they were done.
He taught them how to catch an eel and snare the needed fish,
With summer sun and Squanto's skill corn was their staple dish.

He spent his life in Plymouth land, interpreter and guide,
For, sadly, while he was away, his entire tribe had died.
With Squanto there the Pilgrim's lived and worked without the fear
they would be killed each time a tribe of Indians came near.

A fatal illness struck Squanto down when he was thirty-seven.
He asked the Governor to pray for him that he might go to heaven.
On Turkey Day before you feast on food galore and pronto.
Breathe a prayer the Pilgrim's had an Indian friend named Squanto.

A great historical piece, which added tremendously to mu knowledge. I knew nothing of Squanto,
Thanks for sharing such a good story with such excellent writing.

You are rapidly becoming one of our best.

Well written and thought provoking. It amazes me how so many have taken so much and not given anything in return..Keep up the good work..Yes, I am the Jim Duprie.

Good, well-written verse with a good, nonintrusive rhyme scheme. I learned a lot about a name I've known since about fourth grade, maybe longer. To say it again--Very good writing!

Oh, the irony. In my history class it's covering all the stuff with the colonial era. It's going to melt into the Revolution in the end of this coming week, but I have a test this week and I was studying so it's ironic to read this piece.

You really described Squanto's life well and managed to add a cheerful end. Now I must restart my new computer because Windows is loading me with updates and I need to get a messenger. Good work on this piece! I like your ideas and since these facts are fairly fresh in my mind, I enjoyed it a lot!
