Eighty Five

Headlines screamed out "Eighty Five", perhaps there will be more
before the "smoking gun" misfires outside pro baseball's door.
Thirty-one are all-stars; the most famous name
pitched last for the Yankees,"cinch for Hall of Fame"... but

no greater player ever lived than "Charlie Hustle" Rose.
He's locked out of the Hall of Fame, most everybody knows.
Pete gambled on the baseball field, sliding in head first.
He also did it off the field. They said that was the worst.

Canseco blew the whistle some twenty years ago
but no one really listened; there was too much dough
being made by everyone, so "on with the show!".
Where the show will end this time, no one yet can know.

"What difference does it make?" some ask, "to get a steroid shot?".
It takes away the level field; to most that means a lot!
Honest players work real hard developing their skill
as cheaters; skilled without a doubt; enhance it with a pill.

Bonds hitting home runs has caught most of the heat
while other "stars" we now find out had also learned to cheat.
Baseball will survive this mess to play another day.
I'll opt for only apple pie and buy a Chevrolet.

Good poem for me as I am an ex semi-pro ballplayer. I am also a fan of the Yankees and Pete(Charlie hustle)Rose. I'm sort of a rule-breaker myself BTW, but if you break the rules you know you're going to get the consequences.
My main objection to steroids is that they are quickly working the way down to our youth, and that is CRIMINAL.

Your free-style is getting really good. This seems difficult to write and still maintain good rhythm, but you did it.

Excellent write,

~Rich

Ripped from the headlines! This tells the story (the way a lot of people see it) very well. I liked the way the narrative kept moving, while maintaining the rhyme and rhythm. I can't remember who did the famous recording of "Casey At The Bat", but I'd like to hear a similar reading of your poem.

alas i am here to comment and praise since this one hasnt either yet. Glad to be the first of this magnificient poem.
I like how you made it flow, and your opinions where very true of how people are not true stars by enhancing their games with pills and gambling and getting high and such. Very few stars can truely be remembered because they tried ahrd and didnt cheat which will show the legacy of baseball will live on and some people will still be inspired
I loved this poem because i do follow baseball. do you have a favorite team?
