Our Island

Our island is full of the most magical things:
Some that have shells and some that have wings;
Some in the sea and some on the land,
Some small enough to hold in your hand.
Some who are quite a bit taller than you,
Some who are only an inch or two.
Some who are round and some who are flat,
Some who are big but not really fat.
Some need the sun and live where it’s bright,
Some need the dark of the island at night;
Some find their way by watching a star,
Some of them always know right where they are.
Some have a sound or a song that they sing,
Some of them never say anything;
Some live in trees and some underground,
Some are afraid of the least little sound.
Some had to come a very long way;
Some will only be here for a day.
Some like to travel with others they know,
Some are alone wherever they go.
Some like to watch us and some of them don’t;
Some let us near them and some of them won’t.
Some are the hunters and some are the prey;
Some of them simply survive day to day.
This island is full of mysterious things
And full of the magic that such a place brings
To all of our lives, whether humble or grand,
Or just big enough to hold in your hand.

Since writing this poem I have come to it as a piece about the differences in people in our world, but then that's the great thing about poetry -- it works on a number of levels.
Dream a dream and you have. This was beautiful! I like the repetition of some... it brings a sense of variety to the things you have listed. Great Job!

I liked your poem. It reminds me of the time that I spend out doors. I spend a lot of time in the field and up canyons. I see deer and rabbits, squirrels and bugs, snakes and lizards. This work of yours shows how life is in a deserted location. But again, you can see basically the same life in our inner city streets.
