Another Money Grabbing Scam
by John Mcleod

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Last week I submitted a poem to a web-site that said their contest was free. I recieved a letter back from them which included a hand written note which said, 'Excellent work john'.
I was surprised and was quite pleased with myself, until I read the content of the letter.
It said.....

(I have selected your poem to appear in our current chapbook series named (Passages Of Time), Your copies will be shipped to you within 90 days. Due to space limitations purchase is required to ensure publication.
)

Before they said all this they said my work would be in a chapbook that would be sent to twenty librarys in America. I think that if a contest is free then that is what it should be.

The cost of this is $39.95, for five copies, this is the minimum order alowed.

The company name is... JMW Publishing Company.

I feel as though I have been duped by these people, I know that there is many people out there who pay this amount just to see their name in print.
I of course did not pay, I can see through the scam, but what about the unfortunate ones who pay? There should be some governing body that checks these sites and makes sure there is no scam involved.

I just thought I would let you all know about this.

Thank you so much for the warning. I'm glad you wrote this--a lot of writers need to know about this kind of thing.

grief not another ! Poetry.com is enough of a rip-off and yes they got me too except I didn't buy their book, or plaques, or audio tapes, or...

John, there definitely should be some governing body on these "free" publications!

To me, its theft. And they are making a profit on the backs of writers.....as if we love to give our stuff away for free to people who use it for profit.

Its really time for this to stop.

Thanks for "heads up" on this company!
