What is it about an opinion that drops the mouths of others?
Where do all these assumptions of who it is I am to be come from?
What is it about this matter of heart that rubs someone so wrong?
Can I live without the doubt of truth turned into lies?
Must we all crumble to the ills of societies misnomers?
Subject to a fear residing in only our minds, life is too short to hide who we truly are.
Ideally would it be better if we were like books, subject to the pages written upon our souls?
Would person’s interest in such a book as “Me” find strength to look past the cover?
Maybe digging a little deeper one would at least put on the jacket to feel they have a sense of me.
Sooner or later that one person, special to only you will actually spend years reading the book.
Turning each page, like biting into your favorite dessert knowing you should stop but you don’t want to.
Like hiking into the forest with dire curiosity, you continue waiting only for the story to unfold beneath your feet.
But even then, one makes presumptions of which it is you are to be.
Husband, father, son, brother, friend, colleague, confidant, the list grows on.
As time moves on the list for regret may rise, but I see no reason to be forthcoming.
This book is open, read the pages, grow with the characters surrounding it.
Do not stake claim to matters you pretend to understand.
Everyone has a story of their very own, so read up!

Ah, were I to have a devoted reader
to fondle my gilded and golden pages
to be absorbed in the hearty meat within
and get lost in all my assorted phases

Alas, I've been placed upon a shelf
and I'm afraid, forgotten for a time
Entertaining naught but the dust
with stories, prose, lyrics, and rhyme

(I, too, am a book... with more than meets the eye... wishing a cover could say all that the pages within attempt to... and yet, part of the story is the vision seen only through the eyes of the one reading it.) Anyway, perhaps I don't grasp all you've intended to say, but I hear exactly what it is I wish to read here. Thank you for sharing it.

Life's too short to hide who we really are. I agree, why waste a second of it.

A Manuel, (one volume fits all) on the subject of how to: skip all the drama, as we bike down the path would be nice, wouldn't it?

I don't think I've seen any of your writing before this. I'll go look to see if you've written more.

Susan

Comparing people to books... an interesting idea. Perhaps this ties in with the old adage "Never judge a book by its cover", but at any rate the first glance merits a closer look. The title in itself is eye-catching, but is the content good? I would say so.

The most interesting aspect of the work is the concept of comparing people to books. I also like how you urge the reader to "look past the cover" and find the real content. It does take an effort for someone to do that; maybe fear holds them back, or maybe hesitance at what they might find, or maybe because they do not care to. Some people read books for a bit then toss them aside, while others linger over it a while longer and become attached, while only one keeps the book for several years. You have an interesting philosophy behind this poem, one I have not seen before.

I like this poem, but somehow this feels a bit rough. I am not a master of poetry, but the poem feels a bit rough in places. The flow seems to start and stop in a place or two: it starts off fine in the beginning but then slows down a bit in the middle and some towards the end. Other than that, I don't see any other major problems. A good poem with a good message equals a good job: keep it up!

once upon a time I watched and looked to be the reporter. Found a view of words hides the soul. Judgment was to be Gods, as the gun fires death picks for the roles left of earth, so many faces left to read both on the street and the morgue. As we write so much we share insight and heart, enjoyed this work a great deal. Trigger some thoughts hiding for a while.. Walt

Heavy, dude! If we all learned to listen objectively, with the object of learning instead of judging, what a different world this would be.
But for now, it's just a dream, one we must work on one at a time, starting at home. I am much impressed. A little rough here and there, but you'll catch that when you do an edit. A good read.
