Sonnets From the Porch for Geese
by Mike Gallimore (Age: 58)
copyright 03-04-2008

Age Rating: 13 to 127

With apologies to dear Ms. Browning,
I’ve been writing poems for geese.
As I watch their constant clowning,
I can’t desist and will not cease.

I think it must be frustrating
To watch their cousins on the wing.
These birds without the means to fly
Are driven by the need to try.

Some days the wind appears just right
To have another go at flight.
They run downhill and flap their wings,
While overhead a Honker sings.

But flight for them’s not meant to be
As they very quickly see.
For, even with a little lift,
It is a very short-term gift.

They get just barely off the ground,
And in amazement look around;
Then flap and flap for all they’re worth,
And still they always fall to earth.

And so, one has to wonder why
God gives us wings if we can’t fly;
And why he puts just out of reach
The lesson that he’s trying to teach.

As for geese, they get the joke –
Some can fly and some are broke.
But some get fed three times a day,
While some are always someone’s prey.

Regardless of the, I'm going to presume, tongue-in-cheek titling, which rounds out the satirical message of this piece nicely, it's well done and catches the reader totally off-guard. Just as I'm settled down to enjoy these rural wanderings, the last two stanzas throw me out of the porch swing, because I didn't install it properly and it fell on top me, under my own weight. ^^

Enjoyable read, thank you.

Frank :)
