Long Into The Night

Long into the night the pen
hurries across the page
a shadow running from itself
outside in the back yard
the cutting odious sharpness
of dog-droppings slices the night
nature mocks your ego
shreds the soul of your poem
forces your pen to run away
writing of reality in the darkness, where
you envision beauty within and without
when the light returns
your pen refuses to translate it
the truth is not obscured
it cascades from your eyes
then vanishes on paper
as each stroke fades
red ink soaking into a blotter
you tell me
intelligence is the thief
of truth,life, death
what remains is a pen
going around in circles
long into the night
Dogs in back-yards
hiding behind their barks
I had a dream once about dogs wherein
they acquired an awareness of wisdom
and sensing the burden thereof

I was with you on this one, line for line, word for word, until the very end. The last two lines left me very troubled as not fitting within the feeling of the rest of your work. Also, and probably, because the entire write seemed to be a minor departure from what I've come to expect. Complacency is a terrible trap for any reader to fall into. Also, I think that my own identification with your pen's misbehavior was entrapped by your words, then jolted free with the last two lines. A masterful, calculated thing you did. It is appreciated. ^^
