Always the Darkness
by Wayne Thomas (Age: 58)
copyright 03-31-2008

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Remembering, lonely long, on rainy nights
like this one,
a time or so when every moment of
such fine life
was a technicolor scream,
a blind shot into cold and blinder
darkness,
times you know, when thin gray snow
bumps off a pine bough onto
unsuspecting cap and shoulders,
proceeding to melt,
trickling icily down
wool wrapped pink skin,
all the way down.
And my, life is good, isn't it,
fraught with anxiety
as a school kid
at a pie eating contest,
having just sized up
the hefty competition.
While unfocused eyes dream
of canvas sails and wooden decks
and polished spars and rails,
sliding along beneath the moonlight
on a wide nacrescent river,
just the two of us, see,
and with this new
Cassegrain,
I really can!
"Look!" I scream like a girl
with a frog down her shirt,
"Look! The Martian polar cap!"
But it slides too,
into the greater and deeper
darkness.
The darkness returning.
Always the darkness.
Always.

A beautiful write. I really enjoyed reading this. The imagery you painted was vivid and beautiful and the poem flowed together beautifully.
You have written a wonderful piece of work! Keep it up!

Not having the time, I find it difficult to read and write and comment as I'd like. Upon reading your poem, however, my entire day (complete with every hectic item on my overcrammed "TO DO" list) has taken an immediate back seat to my current purpose, that being to leave a meaningful and heartfelt comment that adequately relays my inner depth of appreciation and surprising awe at reading such a wonderful poem. I'm not surprised that you wrote such a wonderful work, as you almost always do... more that it happened upon my eyes when it would be most appreciated. Sigh...

As I read and re-read and read yet again the wonderful flowing words above, I can see the breathtaking sight through, with my own eyes and through the telescope, (and smell and hear the water) while sailing down the nacreous river you mentioned. I can feel the melting snow as it takes my breath away and I shake and shimmy and squeal in utter surprise... and delight. Sigh...

And then, as if fading into some lost memory, overshadowed and overwritten by time and unforeseen occurrence... And the momentary bliss, the shout, the scream of joy in life... fades...

when every moment of
such fine life
was a Technicolor scream,
a blind shot into cold and blinder
darkness,

(GULP)... (Tears)... and I can't find the words... to thank you...

Your Sis,

Mary

Like a magnet your words draw and pull, a clever well crafted use of tools, message and image playing, mental targeting, creative and impressive all in one picture, impressive.. Walt

This is a beautiful poem. I love the way it floats across the page. "And my life is good, isn't it?" That's my favorite line here. As always the darkness returns, always!

Yep...it does!

Looking forward to reading more of your work.
Susan
